Default People still replying to your old Hotmail address?

If you have recently switched to a new email account, you will have probably told all your contacts to update their address book, but as we all know not all of them do!

A few weeks later you happen to log into your old account to check and you find a mail from an old friend who is still writing to your old account. Well here's the best way to deal with it.

Hotmail now allows you to set a different reply-to address for your messages. So when they hit reply their message will be sent to your new address.

To set this up click:

Options (at the top right of the Hotmail screen)

Message replies

In the Reply to address select "Identify the address below as the reply-to address" and type in your new address.

Click OK.

Then reply to their message in the normal way, perhaps mentioning once again to update their address book. You could even tell them (if they are using Hotmail) that after they reply to your message, Hotmail will ask them if they want to add this address to their contact list.

On a separate note, for people wanting to switch to a hotmail.co.uk account to try to get an email address with their own name, look at this page that shows you how to download TrueSwitch moving wizard which can update your contacts list and inform people of your change of address.

If you want to keep track of old email addresses, you can download the E-Prompter application that allows you to log into multiple accounts simultaneously.

One more tip... For people who are sick of junk mail, don't use email addresses that the spammer's programs will guess easy.

Example: johhsmith@ hot mail.... will result in 100s of junk mails
mail_johnsmith@ hot mail.... will result in WAY LESS!

If you don't believe me try it.. (I rarely get any junk delivered to my Hotmail since I did this)

And as people on these forums often say, don't write your email address in forums, write it like this

johnsmith at hotmail dot com

Good tip about e-mail addresses, Chris. I don't get much spam, hardly any in fact. I'm picky about where I put my e-mail addresses and my surname's not particularly common. I'll pass this tip on to my daughter, her name's nearly as common as Smith!
