Default Missing file <Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe.

When I turn on my PC, I'm unable to start Windows (I'm using XP). Initially I get a message saying Windows cannot start, and offering various options - Safe Mode, Last Known Good Configuration, Start Windows Normally, etc. Whichever one of these I choose, I end up with this error mesage:

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

<Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe.

Please re-install a copy of the above file"

I've tried re-installing XP from my installation disk but nothing happens - I just can't get beyond the above error message. I'd be v. grateful if anyone can tell me how I can fix this.

Insert your Xp disk into the CD drive, choose the boot from command prompt option in the menu that you are presented with

At the command prompt, type in the following:

copy d:\I386\Driver.cab c:\system32\ntoskrnl.exe /v

where d is the letter of your cd drive

press enter

Take the CD out when verified and reboot your computer

Yeah so...i have the ntoskrnl problem too. and it hasnt been the first time.
after a while i got sick of just not touching the thing and just re-installed windows.

somehow a few years later, it's happened again, but this time....it's much different.
Firstly the problem is now accompanied by a succession of VERY rapid beeps.
worst of all, i cant do ANYTHING! not a saussage. the keyboard doesnt respond so i cant open the BIOS menu or run the xp disk to start again.
I know it's not the keyboards fault as it's just your standard microsoft buisness keyboard, no installation required.
I get the horrible feeling that i may have to buy a new hard drive....what do you guys think?

The Recovery Console uses a command prompt for commands such as those above.

Follw the boot from CD instructions then you press R for Recovery Console.

Here is where you type the command.
