Hi! I have a 4 y/o laptop(WindowsXP SP3) and we've been using Norton Internet Security eversince. Lately I have been reminded that my NIS is nearing expiration and so a friend advised me to just avail of free security software. He uninstalled my NIS and even run the Norton Removal Tool...no problem with that. Next he proceeded to install AVG Antivirus free but unable to continue with the installation because a dialog box is saying I have no internet connectivity and that I should check my proxy setting. I don't remember tinkering about proxy setting and so unable to proceed. Clicking "Retry" gives me the same dialog box...no internet connectivity. All throughout I have internet connection because I can surf/browse using IE. Also I have tried installing Firefox but after downloading the installer the installation just wouldn't progress and die out. Same thing with Malwarebytes AntiMalware...I was able to download the installer and install it BUT unable to run it...clicking "perform quick scan" will only result to about 2 seconds of scanning and then the MBAM interface will be gone. I was succesfull in installing CCleaner, SpywareBlaster, and Hostsman BUT why the failed AVG installation, failed Firefox install and failed running of scanning of MBAM? Please help me as I am posting this without an antivirus.

Please go to the HIJACK THIS LOGS forum, read the post at the top from THE FAT CONTROLLER which explains how to post a HIJACK THIS LOG. and post your log in that forum along with a brief description of what problems you are having.

Thanks bricat for coming to my rescue BUT Im afraid I might not be able to post a HiJackThis Log because I am also unable to install the HiJack This from TrendMicro. It's as if something is preventing it...and my observation is those programs related to security defense are being prevented either to be downloaded, to be installed(Firefox), and to be run(MBAM). I cant update my AVG and I can't install HijackThis. I can't run also F-Secure Online Scan. I have read in my searching that this could be due to Norton not completely removed and so I tried to get the Norton Removal Tool by going to this site>>> Norton Removal Tool but I was prevented from accessing the site(I am using a different computer now in replying to you)...there's a message like "IE cannot display the webpage"...like this>>> example only and when I click on "Diagnose" it will say "the server is unable blah blah blah" I cant remember the exact message...sometimes it will say "error 405...server not allowed blah blah blah" I can't remember again. Somebody advise me to use Eusing Registry Cleaner because he thinks I have incompletely removed the NIS but after running it and fixing everything still no luck. I also used CCleaner's registry cleaner but after fixing everything still no joy. What kind of infection is this? I can't run some security software, can't access some sites and getting server unable message and error 405. I'd like to believe this is all just the effect of having remnants of Norton(the Norton Removal Tool I have used before is from MajorGeeks site) but I can't access the Symantec site to access their Norton Removal Tool.
I hope you can help me. What other software would you advise me to run...I'll give it a try hoping I'd be lucky to be able to install it...and run it.

It's generally advised on the Norton forums to run the Norton Removal Tool twice, just to be sure that everything's gone, although running it only once shouldn't cause the problems you've been experiencing.
Judging by the problems you're having downloading/installing and running various programs/applications, I think that it's very likely that you've picked up some malware somewhere. I suspect that bricat thinks the same which is why he wants you to post a log in the Hijack This Logs forum.
Is it possible for you to install the HJT file via another computer onto a flash drive and then install and run it on the affected PC? If not, I don't know what else to suggest and I fear your options will be somewhat limited.
You might like to have a look at the AVG forum where you can read about installation/uninstallation issues, but I'm not confident that they'll help with your problem.

Try the option to download Hijackthis to your Desktop. If that goes well then try renaming it to say rony.exe and then try installing it in the usual way. Once you've done that run the programme and post the log as requested by Bricat.
In any event start a new thread in the Hijackthis forum as Bricat may have other suggestions for you to consider.
Joe.

I really would like to be able to use HijackThis but the problem is whenever i try to use/run the installer NOTHING happens...as if something is killing its execution. How can I go about this?
