Hijack This Log For Analysis Please :)
      #434151 - Fri Jul 10 2009 02:33 PM

Hi again,

Cheers Bricat, as my post in the security section, after installing IE8 and having e-mail problems, I tried a system restore to rectify it but now after the system restore would not finish I am unable to open my IE browser (it opens and shuts as quick) and also Internet Options will not open.

Here is my Hijack This log as requested -

I don't see anything untoward in your log.

i suggest you remove IE8, a lot of people have had problems with it, once you delete IE8 it will automatically revert to IE7.

To uninstall Internet Explorer 8, follow these steps:

1. Close all programs.
2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
3. Click Add or Remove Programs.
4. In the list of currently installed programs, click Windows Internet Explorer 8, and then click Remove.

see how that goes, and let me know if IE7 works ok.

Cheers Bricat your help is really appreciated

I dont have Internet Explorer 8 in the list of add and remove programs. I am guessing this is because of the "failed" system restore I did? There is IE7 but I am unable to do anything with this.

I will try installing IE7 again over the current version and see what happens?

Thanks again mate I will let you know how i get on!

No that didnt make a difference.

I really dont know what to do. Maybe try installing IE8 again and then doing a full uninstall?

I will give it a go anyway

Something is definately wrong with Internet Explorer 7 on my laptop?

I installed IE8 again and hey presto I could access Internet Explorer and Internet Options. Unfortunately I was still having the same problem with the e-mail I had when I initially installed IE8 yesterday, the mail button in the browser wont link to my Outlook Express account like IE7 did and keeps choosing MSN Explorer. Anyway, so I thought OK I will uninstall IE8 and hopefully IE7 will be back working again.

Unfortunately not! IE7 is the same as before it just shuts down as soon as I open it (also no Internet Options)! Is there anyway to do a complete fresh install of Internet Explorer 7? If not I will just have to use Internet Explorer 8 and not check my mail via the browser.

Thanks for any advice you can offer mate

as this isn't a malware problem it's a bit out of my area, i tend to wait instead of updating right away when new things are released, there have been too many updates in the past that have been disastrous, hence that's why i use firefox, and my IE is still version 7.
you're best bet would be to post a question in the "web browser software" forum, where some of the more techie members should be able to help you.
good luck

Just a quick update for anyone who has the same problem -

After abit of reading today it appears my problems are quite common.

XP machines with Service Pack 3 do not like to be reverted from IE8 to IE7 apparently and it will cause these conflicts. I am sure there is a solution somewhere but after alot of looking I still havent found one.

Another problem is with Outlook Express and IE8's apparent incompatibility which is why mine wont work! I guess there is a long way to go with bug fixing on IE8? Such a shame mine came through as an automatic update

Oh well, for now I have IE8 running and Outlook Express on my desktop. Its better than nothing but not better than before so beware before you update to IE8!

(Thanks again to bricat for confirming it was not malware etc)
