My Sister has Microsoft Office 2007 and I have 2003, I do not know how she is saving documents but I wouldimaginewit should default to word document if that is what you opended. When she emails the document to me it arrives as unknkown file type and I cannot open it (DAT file) Is she doing something wrong at her end oris my Office 2003 simply not compatable with 2007 Is there some sort of download I can get from Microsoft downloads

Microsoft Outlook is responsible for sending Winmail.dat files and, if the recipient of the emails isn't also using Outlook, the attachment is useless. Microsoft have an article HERE about how to avoid sending Winmail.dat files from Outlook, but it probably requires a degree in computer science to follow! Could she perhaps use an alternative email program such as Outlook Express in XP or Windows Mail in Vista to send the attachments?
Also, she should save the Word documents as Word 97/2003 .doc files, rather than Word 2007's default .docx format.
