My daughter and her husband decided to remove an old hard drive that no longer worked and then tried to install a new IDE type. The trouble is after giving up they brought it to me and i have checked, and rechecked that all connections are secure, the jumper at the back of the drive is set to master as it is the only hard drive and then after installing a new Linux OS re-booted the computer during which i re-set the boot sequence so the computer would boot-up from the hard drive. But all i can see is a screen full of different colors?
When i run the Linux "Live CD" everything is fine so there can't be a problem with the motherboard or onboard graphics chip?
Could she and her husband having removed the old hard drive (Being a SATA hard drive), some how mistaken purchased an IDE hard drive to install and hence the problem?
If so is there something in the BIOS i could alter that would allow the new IDE hard drive to function?
They purchased the computer which had Windows Vista Basic pre-installed. I know they got rid of the pre-installed Windows OS by installing a number of different Linux distro's on it (over writing each other) before the hard drive stopped working. So they purchased another hard drive (IDE) and although they can manage to run some Linux Live CD's but not all i just can't figure out why i can't install a new Linux OS onto the new hard drive.
