Hello all.
Just wondering if any of you are planning to dive straight into Windows 7 when it's launched? If so, will you be buying a new PC or upgrading your existing one? What OS will you be upgrading from? And what are your hopes and/or concerns for the new OS?
If you're not planning on changing, what are you sticking with? What do you like about it? Or is there another reason that you don't want to change operating system, like the financial cost or the risk that your peripherals and drivers might not work straight off the block?
Please let me know your thoughts.

Hi Andy
I'm actually considering going for the Archos 9 PC Tablet.
It will take advantage of the new touchscreen Windows 7 features.
Why do I want a Tablet PC? Well I write software that uses Word documents and this will be an ideal device to take out to enter data on site.
Also quite like the digital TV tuner too

Hopefully yes.
I have the RC installed on this machine dual booting with XP and I really like it.
I will hopefully buying a new base unit with W7 preinstalled.
I hope that it lives up to the RC version and provides a little more, all my peripherals work with W7 too.
Let's see what deals are available at the time and also see what my cash is like too.

I'm taking the plunge in December with a new computer (self Built) I'm going to pre order the OS as the Price is out of my price range when the Pre order offer finishes in Mid August. The edition I'm going for is the Professional which can run my XP software. and Better networking utilities
The Home version has nothing bar "It can play your CD/DVD's" and sounds to me (on the description) It's only got a PVR type Feature for your entertainment Ditto the Ultimate version which has less than a handful of features (Which I'd find no use for) over the Professional... and is Double the price of Professional! (No pre-order discount!)
So out of the Wide "choice" There is No Choice, Bar Professional Priced at a penny under 100 Pounds. FYI Windows XP Professional(with SP3) retails at this Price too This will be a shade over 200 pounds on Launch day = Double the price plus the full 17.5% VAT! And yes I would be getting another Copy of XP Professional If there was No cut off support date in view As for those updating from Vista there is Nothing to suggest that this will be compatible with Vista sofware? OR is it a Full compatible version ...a Vista rewrite/Relaunch with a New Name (Kings New Clothes?) As for the software developers Can any of them tell us if Windows 7 code, is Vista Code or a variation on the same?
And Lastly this is really silly If the rumour is correct Does everybody get the same Disk with all the code for every version, and you can "update" by buying a new unlock code? And as I said in another Posting the US are getting the same as us(with IE 8.0) but @ $99.99 to our £99.99 Pounds which is £61.67 !!
Their "full price" therefore is £123.35!! If this gets out, I can see a lot of people asking Contacts Stateside to get hold of a copy if, they work on both side of the Pond?

Made me smile - I never jump into anything where computers are concerned. A new mouse may take weeks of musing. So, no. they'll have to prise me away from XP (and it's years of not quite perfecting imperfections!), but I'll watch with interest.

Not a chance. I'll let the rest of the world sort out its glitches first. I'm currently diving into a new OS anyway - Linux Ubuntu 9.04. It ain't perfect, but for my needs it is much less hassle, security and update wise, than anything M$ has had to offer.

Yes, I had a very quick play with an Archos 9 tablet just the other day - very nice piece of kit.
Archos is looking at launching more things in September, including Google internet hardware running Android. They wouldn't say anything more but it definitely sounds like it's going to be something to look out for.
I'm not surprised that no-one has mentioned that they're looking to upgrade existing hardware to Windows 7 - we usually see a few problems from people trying to upgrade OS.
I'd like to think that I might be able to get a new PC to run it on but I don't think I'm going to persuade the family that it's a viable way to spend a few hundred pounds, when the PC I bought when Vista came out is still going nice and strong.

I`ll definitely get it but I`m not in any particular rush. I`ve had this laptop for nearly 3 yrs so always intended to upgrade soon anyway.Ive got Vista Basic at the moment although I have to say that I`ve had no trouble whatsoever with it.

I'll probably wait until I get a new PC; whenever that might be.

I'm absolutely going to Windows 7. I'm very excited for it. I've been testing Windows 7 RC for a while on several different machines. My 7 year old laptop, my nice quad-core development tower, even an old celeron eMachine junk box (which I normally run as a slackware Linux fileserver). It seems to run just peachy on all of them. If you haven't tried it out, you can still get the RC for free until August 15th, when they cut off the downloads. Try it yourself, you can get it off TechNet here: http://tinyurl.com/832nco

I'm not usually an early adopter when it comes to Windows OS but having just got a new machine with Vista who knows.
I was contemplating getting a copy of XP Pro (full install, I have an upgrade already, that would mean installing an old copy 95 and upgrading...) but I'm tempted to hang on and get Windows 7.

Although cheaper in the USA the price they see on the shelf is minus sales tax which last time I was in Florida was 6% although this is still cheaper than the UK price once sales tax is added

Although I want a desktop I may just let the rush die down then see what offers the manufacturers throw at us to get us to buy a new system after all the I must have this new item brigade have paid top price. It always pays to wait where new technology is concerned. I remember walking into comet the first day VISTA was launched and all the sales people where round the PCs, they tried to sell me one even when I said I wasn't interested so I walked out and went elsewhere. Those new machines had 1Gb RAM
