Knowing which start up programs to delete
Computer: when we start it up, there are 70 to 80 programs which start themselves. I would like something (free and/or not free) to tell me what each one does, and if I need to run it, or stop it loading on starting windows. .

Download and install the free Quick Startup, here http://www.glarysoft.com/qs.html?tag=download
Click on (highlight) an entry, then in the left pane choose Disable, Delete or, even, Add. If you are unsure about an entry and want to know more about it before disabling or deleting it, highlight it and then click More information at the bottom.

The BLACK VIPER website will tell you which "services" you can safely disable in whichever version of Windows you're running. (To access "services" go to "Start > Run", type services.msc and click OK.)
As regards "programs" launching at startup, that's down to personal preference. No "programs", apart from AntiVirus, Anti-spyware and Firewall, need to be launched at startup.
To disable programs that are launched automatically from the registry, go to "Start > Run", type msconfig and click OK. Select the Startup tab and untick the items you don't want to launch.
To disable programs that are launched automatically from the Startup folder, go to...
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
...and delete the unwanted program shortcuts.
