Win32/Cryptor
      #433186 - Fri Jun 26 2009 05:26 PM

Hi, I have been referred here from the Security Help forum. The background is that AVG 8.5 free edition identified ;"Virus found Win32/Cryptor". I selected virus vault and the file was moved, full details shown as "C:\WINDOWS\system32\vsmonapi.dll";"";"23/06/2009, 09:24:04". I ran okay for a few days until a reboot, then Zone Alarm, which uses that file would not start. To keep things brief, I eventually loaded the file back into the sytem and then things ran normally. I ran another scan and this time it was clean.

By the way, I am an XP/Pro user using Zone Alarm free edition as my firewall.

Hope that is sufficient info.

Thanks....Terry

Thanks for the detail, all a bit scary for someone like me. I didn't notice any changes whilst the scan was running. It did tell me Norton Antivirus was running but it shows as disabled in the tray (it came with the box, I've never used it). I did try to open it in some way but it came up with what looked like installation instructions so I cancelled at that point).

I really don't understand the recovery console bit - should I setup when the rest is resolved?

It looks like vsmonapi.dll was a false positive from AVG, they have probably updated to remove that file from their dangerous list, that's why the scan is clean now.

Norton is running and probably slowing down your computer.

download and run the NORTON REMOVAL TOOL to get rid of it.

then :-

Download and scan with CCleaner
  1. CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation.
IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbar-free or Slim versions instead of the Standard Build.
  2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"
    Then select "Cookies"
Move any cookies you wish to retain, e.g. login cookies, in the left-hand window to the right-hand window by highlighting them and clicking the right arrow in the centre.

  3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.
    In the Windows Tab:

    • Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section.
    • Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
    • Leave the "Advanced" section at default.
    • Clean any others that you choose.
Leave the system section at default

    In the Applications Tab:

    • Clean all entries in the Mozilla Firefox Section.
    • Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
    • Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
    • Clean any others that you choose.

  4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
  5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
  6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
  7. Click "exit" when done.

then DEFRAG your C:\ drive.

to help speed up your system.

then let us know how the computer is running.

Thanks for the clean bill of health, that really is a relief.

I'll perform the activities you listed over the weekend and get back to you with the outcome.

Really do appreciate your help and input.

Regards....Terry

First query, sorry if I am being dense. Went to the Norton uninstall link, selected the appropriate product and now am unsure. In step 2 The insns talk about looking at help & support. When I open Norton, the screen I get is like one that will start the installation, in fact it says 'Click Next to start full installation' so I'm not sure what action to take at this point. As I have no intention of reinstalling, I'm obviously not bothered about the product key.

Thanks...Terry

norton is already partially installed, it has 6-7 services running.
just run the removal tool to totally remove it.

Followed all your instructions and cleaned things up - I've been running like this for about five days now and things are generally better all round, Startup seems smoother and scan time was well down.

So, many thanks for the help and very specific guidance.

Regards....Terry
