Speed slows to nothing
      #433175 - Fri Jun 26 2009 09:18 AM

Hi All,
Orange have advised me that after some important improvements I can expect a increase in my BB speed.
Well yes the speed has increased from under 2Meg up to just over 5Meg.
BUT only in the early morning.
Later in the day it is so slow that the speed testing web sites can't even give me a reading!
Question, Is this Orange who can't cope or the web that is causing the slow speeds.
The reason for asking is I tempted to switch suppliers but would other ISP's give me the faster service throughout the day?
Regards,
Try.

There are a number of reasons why a person's broadband speed can be slow at certain times of day. The fact that the speed is OK in the early morning indicates that this is not a hardware or connection fault.

Although your connection may be shared by up to 50 users, normally this does not have a serious impact on your broadband speed unless a high proportion of sharers are continually active at the same time. I suspect that this is the main reason your broadband speed is so poor later in the day but changing your ISP would not necessarily improve the situation.

Other sharers downloading large files like video and audio at the same time will mean a greater amount of continuous activity on your connection than simple browsing but it is difficult to see what you can do about this except to use the Internet at times when your shared connection is less likely to be so busy.

Another possible reason for a slow speed later in the day is that you are trying to access websites which are being heavily used at that time.

If you are using a unsecured wireless router, there is a possibility that another computer user within its range is making use of it to watch videos, films or make large downloads, which will severely slow down your broadband speed. The solution is to make your router secure so that others cannot share its connection.

You could also try contacting your ISP about the problem to see if they can do anything to improve the situation, such as getting a technician to check your line at the problem time.
