Security basics orientation

Is there a generally recognized authoritative website that the non-technical user can use to make an informed decision on:

1. which freebie software (e.g. to provide a firewall) combination offers the best protection for his/her circs.

2. whether any significantly improved protection apart from convenience (like from a suite) can be obtained by going for a paid-for commercial alternative.

Up to now I have been getting contradictory and confusing reports and wonder if indeed there is an answer!

Hi. You don't say what OS you are using, but Optimize Guides has great, sensible advice on all things Windows XP, including security.

Tks for the tip - I have only just now read your reply by accident, the auto-notification must have failed. I am indeed using XP, Home, and there seems to be a whole load of "guides" covering it (in addition to the paid ads!). May be somewhere there there is something about upgrading from USB1 to USB 2 also.
