Ice Road Truckers
      #384948 - Sun Feb 17 2008 05:17 PM

Out of curiosity on Friday night I watched the Ice Road Truckers programme on Channel 5.

Now if you are fedup with your present job, in need of a change then this could be for you. All it entails is to drive a truck carrying 40-50 tons of materials up a road for 250 miles to a diamond mine.

Piece of cake? Well, except for the fact the road is on a frozen lake and the ice is only about 36 inches deep, maybe. At least the money's good - if you finally get there!

Interested? - take a peek.

I was fascinated just watching but thought, "now this one hell of a way to earn a living." It's just not for me.

I've seen a few of them and the guys that drive them all do it to a fixed timetable to keep the road in working order
The road trains in Australia need the same mentality to drive those and they have several trailers coupled together and Drive across the Desert at night at High speed ! 15 minute You Tube clip Many more off this link

I've been watching that too George! Did you see the lorry that went through the ice? Scary, thankfully the driver got out safely! What a way to earn a living!

I watched the programmes as well George. Tough life that given you could not only fall through the ice at any time or freeze to death if your engine fails or loose limbs from frost bite. Not for me at this time of life.

Joe.

What a way to earn a living! I'll never again grumble about scraping the frost off of the car windscreen in the morning.

As if a breakdown at -40 deg or worse still, a truck going through the ice isn't bad enough, the convoy behind gets backed up sitting on the ice, engines going, to stop them freezing, causing vibrations in the ice! My nerves would not stand it, especially seeing those cracks snake across the ice in front of you.
They must be a hardy bunch.
