comp running at 100 per cent al the time
      #326556 - Mon Jan 15 2007 10:42 AM

hi everyone, i am new here, i am sorry if i wasnt supposed to post this here but i am new to forums.
my partner has a desktop which is just over a year old, running on windows xp. everytime he starts the computer up the cpu usage is at 100 per cent,it means his comp is very slow and he is limited to what he can do with it.
he usually has to do at least 5 restarts until it goes normal. he usually has 67 processes running..

currently he has mcafee and i may be wrong but it seems to be part of the problem.

is there anything he can do to get his pc back to normal? also i can post a screenshot of the processes if needed.thankyou in advance.

67 ! Probably answered your own question ! Take a look at Startup Inspector for Windows and trim a few. Get them down to about the 35 - 40 region which should improve the situation.

It may also be a good idea to get a Hijackthis log checked out. You should read all of the instructions here, and then post a new log here (not in this area of the forum).

But doesn't that software only tell you what progs are running at start up and not what services are running ?

I'd love to be able to trim my services down but haven't found anywhere that seems to give a definitive answer on what to turn off or not in sevices.msc

This link . . . . >> How to determine which programs and services are loading into memory when Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition starts up should help further to stop unwanted Services starting.

Be sure to continue the tutorial with the tab at the end of each page.
