My Ntlworld takes three times before it actually connects tot he internet. Also, when im actually connected, i get either the interent not responding (cant go to web sites and email),or a bad connection rate, thje worst of which is 14.4kps. can anyone help with this? Tue Sep 18 18:24 2001 reply
If you are a NTL customer and they have broadband in your area, why not try converting to this. There is a 64k modem available for £5/month which gives on average 6Kb/s with the advantage of always on connection. Tue Oct 09 10:23 2001 reply

Hi there, Can anyone help me,I ran my system file checker and found that my user.exe file is corrupted, but I can't find where it is to replace the corrupt file. Sat Sep 15 18:32 2001 reply
Go to Start | Run | Type in "SFC". When the dialog box pops up, you may choose either to replace a particular system file (if you know exactly which file is corrupt) or let the checker scan all system files (recommended). When the checker finds the damaged system file, it should prompt you to restore it (2nd Option). Insert the installer CD and proceed. Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Mon Sep 17 13:28 2001 reply
Hi. I have Zone Alarm on my computer, which I find very good, but one of the windows that it puts up on my screen very often is "do you allow backweb.exe to act as your server" What is backweb, and is it usful, or is it a virus? Fri Sep 14 10:19 2001 reply
BackWeb.exe allows you to subscribe to various Internet "broadcast channels". Each channel delivers real-time content such as news, wallpapers, screen savers, and software updates. I can't see any reason for it to be allowed server rights, so would click no. I would imagine it has been installed alongside REALplayer, though I can't be positive on that one Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Sat Sep 15 14:37 2001 reply
can anyone tell me what spool32exe is and why does it come on when i boot up? Wed Sep 12 20:34 2001 reply
Spool32.exe is the command required by your computer to print anything. If it shows at start up, it suggests that it has been corrupted. The easiest way to deal with this is to delete your printer and reinstall. Go to Start | Settings | Printers. Right click your printer and delete, reboot your computer, and Windows should find and reinstall your printer Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Thu Sep 13 14:15 2001 reply

I share my PC with my kids, I have set up user profiles for each of us as the kids wanted to download wallpapers from the net and use them in their profile. The problem that I have got and would like remedied is the matter of screen savers. My daughter has a "cats" saver, my son another and I dont want either of them, but as soon as the screen saver is changed in one user profile it is automatically changed in all profiles. How can my PC allow for each user to have their own screen saver, rather than one that is adopted across all profiles. Help!! Tue Sep 11 22:38 2001 reply

One of the biggest space grabbers is Desktop themes. If it is installed remove it by going to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Add/remove Programs | Windows setup | Untick Desktop themes. While you are there, untick your games, go back to the add/remove and see if there are any programs in the list that you use very infrequently. Highlight and click remove. Hi Iain Thanks for your assistance so far, Most of what you mentioned I have already explored and sorted. Can you help further? Mick Mon Sep 10 19:32 2001 reply
One thing that you might want to do is to compress your less regularly used files, using an application like winzip. One drastic action to take would to be purchase another hard drive and run it as a slave drive to your existing drive. With HDDs dropping in price all the time, this isn't so expensive as it may seem, but still a bit drastic nonetheless. Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Thu Sep 13 22:09 2001 reply

Hi just a small problem. when i try to use paint it runs that slow i can go and make a coffee between actions anyone know whats wrong with this program?? many thanks martin Sun Sep 09 20:24 2001 reply
All graphics programs are memory hogs, but Paint is especially bad. You really need a minimum of 64k RAM for it to be even close to effective. If you have got 64k, then there are two things you might want to try.. Firstly make sure that your disk has been defragmented. Secondly, reduce the number of programs that are running whilst you are using Paint by using Ctrl Alt Del and closing off all but your systray and explorer. Then reopen Paint. There are two main alternatives are to upgrade your memory 128k is now going for about £22, or install a slightly less memory challenging graphics package. Personally, I would go for the former, and see all round better performance Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Mon Sep 10 13:27 2001 reply
I have recently installed Paint Shop Pro 7 on my PC and just discovered that it turns all my JPEG files into Paint Shop Pro Image files. Does anybody know how I can stop it from doing this? Sat Sep 08 14:41 2001 reply
On second thoughts, you don't need to un-install. If you open PSP and click File > Preferences > File Format Associations > Remove All > Yes, all the file associations will be deleted. Then go back to the list and put a check mark against "Paint Shop Pro images". Sorry, I meant "Iain" not "Ian"! Sat Sep 15 15:20 2001 reply
Hi Alison. With deference to Ian's answer (he's forgotten more than I'll ever know) I think you need to un-install the program and re-install it but make sure that when it asks during the install procedure which file types you want to be associated with PSP, make sure the main ones (gif, jpeg, etc) aren't checked. I had the same problem and that's how I got around it. Sat Sep 15 14:39 2001 reply

Sat Sep 08 10:28 2001 reply
Hi! If there are still problems the Anti-Virus Program could be running in the background too. As they say, close running programs using CTRL-ALT-DEL, but RUN msconfig and go to STARTUP, Tick programs one by one to remove them tempoarily if needed except manager and sys tray, RESTART and try again. MICROSOFT does have a paper on it called "CLEAN BOOT", (Q267288) and another under DEFRAGMENTER FAQ support.(Q186978).Thanks, Ron Sun Sep 16 19:08 2001 reply

Hi, I hope someone can help me. I can't run scan disc or defrag, even in safe mode, has anyone got any ideas? Sun Sep 16 14:40 2001 reply
Hi there. Have you tried rebooting your machine in 'safe' mode (Press F8 when starting computer). Windows will then only load basic driver so your screen may appear 'weird' but its ok. Now try to run defag. Hope this helps :) Tue Sep 11 09:36 2001 reply
Since posting this question I have discovered a remedy elsewhere and pass it on for others. Evidently control-alt-delete does not stop all programmes running, especially device drivers, whatever they may be. The way round it is to delete all the programs in control-alt-delete, disable screensaver then reboot into 'safe mode' and run Scandisk from there, also useful for running defrag as well when that won't behave. Hope this is useful to somebody. It works!!! Mon Sep 10 20:39 2001 reply
Ian, Immediately after restarting, watch for the text message "Starting Windows". When you see this message, press F8 to display the Windows startup menu. Choose the Safe Mode option and wait for your computer to finish booting. Both disk utilities should run fine from Safe Mode. It is probably a dodgy cluster on the hard drive which scandisk is trying to recover. Don't be too worried, most hard drives accumulate some bad clusters over a period of time. It's when the percentage reaches 5% of your total clusters that you should start getting concerned. Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Mon Sep 10 19:38 2001 reply

I quote from the Zonelabs Web site "This is caused by a strain of a virus called Hybris (also known as TTFLoader). This virus/worm is considered malware and is not a product of Zone Labs but is designed to give that impression by changing a desktop¿s Internet Explorer homepage to www.zonelabs.com. Several viruses and worms set your homepage to www.zonelabs.com in an attempt to discredit Zone Labs. Zone Labs' products do not do this. It is unfortunate that a malware author saw a need to misdirect people to our website in their virus/worm. We do not support or encourage malware authoring and we are not privy to the motivation of the virus/worm author (other than to confuse people and cause consternation). Because this worm spreads using the NetBIOS file sharing features of Windows, it is very important that you scan every other computer on the network for the presence of the virus, using your virus checker. Because it is a self-propagating "worm" program, you should treat this as a serious worm infection and take steps to detect and remove this from all computers shared on your file-sharing network." Hope this answers your question!!! Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Tue Sep 04 17:08 2001 reply

I'm surprised you're not tearing your hair out. The shell fault is caused by an incorrect value in the registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft \Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StreamMRU It frightened me just looking at it :O I wouldn't even think about repairing this myself without scanreg. Go to Start | Run | type in "Scanreg" then OK. This should determine the problem and fix it. Back up first though. The Control Panel problem is something entirely different. The Controlp.htt file located in the C:\Windows\Web\ folder is either missing or has been corrupted. You are going to have to rebuild the Controlp.htt file (you have the technology;)), by performing the following steps: If the file is still present, rename it. (Check by going to Start | Search | Type in "Controlp.htt" If it is there, rename by right clicking and rename. After the "." type "old") Go back to Start | Run | type in "regsvr32 webvw.dll" Click OK. (This action extracts the file to the C:\Windows\Web folder.) The following message should be displayed: "DllRegisterServerin webvw.dll succeeded." The Control Panel folder should display properly in Web view and the Display only commonly used Control Panel options option should have been restored. Either refresh the view in Control Panel (if it is still open), or close it and open it again to see the changes. I'm becoming the master of the longwinded, but this should clear both your problems :) Good luck!!! Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Fri Aug 31 20:45 2001 reply

Make sure that "Installed version of Microsoft" is set to English (U.K.) Then make sure that your keyboard is set to English (British) by going to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Keyboard | "Language" Tab if it is not showing, insert your Windows Disk and click Add. Delete English (U.S) (Changes won't take effect until you re-boot). Finally, stay in Control Panel, go to Regional Settings. Make sure that Regional Settings are set to (Language) English and (Country/Region) United Kingdom. Reboot your PC :) Come back if there are any problems Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Thu Aug 30 22:34 2001 reply
Iain, many thanks for replying. I have tried all you suggest (with the expection of checking the Installed Microsoft version, as I don't know how to do that) and still no joy. All was already set to English (U.K.). Have you any other advice? Tue Sep 04 09:19 2001 reply
Are you using Works or Office 2000? There are some subtle differences, so it might help if you could let me know :) Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Tue Sep 04 17:19 2001 reply

My mouse is acting up (yes, I have cleaned the little guy!) It is registering one click as two a lot of the time and duplicating the command, causing problems with opening files, selecting text and drag and drop. (It drags but doesn't like dropping). PC is set to web style one click. I uninstalled the driver with a view to reinstalling it but Windows (98) won't allow reinstall as Setup tells me there is another driver in use. There is only the one that comes with Windows now. Uninstalling the driver didn't cure the problem anyway. I also tried altering the click speed, didn't help. Is this curable or should I scrap the mouse and buy another. It is not an old one. Mon Aug 27 21:25 2001 reply
Try this, not the most elegant way of doing things but quite effective. Go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | System | "Device Manager" tab Scroll down to Human Interface Devices, highlight it and click Remove. Click yes when it asks you if you want to remove this device. Then do a Ctrl-Alt-Del and press the Tab key until you get to Shut down and enter. This will reboot your pc and hopefully it will find your mouse as it starts up again Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Tue Aug 28 16:19 2001 reply
Please, please help. My computer has suddenly started emitting a constant two sound similar to the sound made when you accidentaly leave your phone off the hook. I haven't got a clue what has caused this and can't relate its commencement with anything I have done. Any ideas? Thanks Mon Aug 27 00:08 2001 reply
Is this on bootup? Could be the BIOS trying to tell you something. Has any cables come loose? Nothing else springs to mind at the moment. Sun Sep 02 11:22 2001 reply
For the past couple of months my CTX monitor has been showing a pink screen from time to time. Sometimes it flickers pink, other times the pink screen remains for a few minutes before returning to its normal colour. I have tried using different screen resolutions, have downloaded the latest monitor drivers and checked all the cables are secure. The monitor is about 18 months old. Any suggestions as to how to stop this happening? Thu Aug 23 23:41 2001 reply
I have also experienced this same problem at work. We tried downloading new drivers, but to no avail. The only answer was to smack it on the right-hand side(hard). It worked without fail! Mon Sep 17 12:44 2001 reply
I don't know if this is correct or not - but my work's IT helpdesk tried to sort this problem for me and informed me that this can happen if your monitor is particularly close to a printer. Anything's worth a try! Sat Aug 25 23:24 2001 reply
I had a monitor that did this. On another PC it didn't seem so bad but still did it and a brisk thump on the side would cure it. Almost certainly a dodgy monitor. Does it have a 3 year warranty? It will probably be a return to base. Try where you bought it from to see if they can help. Sat Aug 25 16:27 2001 reply
Starting problems. I recently installed a web cam, and Inter Can Elite USB version along with software, Mgi photo suite, AverMedia, AverCam, Acer EasyXpress videomail and acer easyAcess Video conferences. But when I installed the above the PC crashed and would not restart , resulting in me having to use start up disc and windows CD ROM to reboot. But after I restarted the PC, I noticed on the black screen you see when you first switch on that there was a new entry. The Plug & Play BIOS had new writing: SD RAM SPD CAS latency time "2", the "2" is brighter that the other writing. This has resulted in my PC starting automatically when the power is switched on at the plug, bypassing the start switch..... The Number "2" in the start up menu seems to be the problem, is it? If so how do I change this setting. My system specs are 60 ram, 400 MHz, 6Gbs & running on windows 98 2nd ed... All the programs are regularly updated..... Can you help me? go to http://search.support.microsoft.com/kb/c.asp Scroll down to Windows 98SE in the "My search is about" Click on specific article and type in "Q240075". There are apparently some problems with USB in SE, so there is a patch from here, along with other information. Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Fri Aug 24 06:49 2001
