Hi and welcome to Webuser.

It looks like this machine could do with a spring clean.

Download and install Crap Cleaner from here.
Open the program and hit 'Run Cleaner' in the bottom right.
Close the program when it's finished.

Your Ad-Aware is also obsolete.
Please download, install and scan with Ad-Aware SE as per the instructions here.
Remove everything it finds.

Reboot your machine and download, install and scan with Spybot S&D as per the instructions here.
Remove everything it finds.

Your AVG version is obsolete.
Please download the latest AVG7 Free Edition from here.
Disconnect from the net and uninstall the old version first before installing the new.
Reconnect and update the virus definitions following the prompts and then run a full system scan.

Your HijackThis is out of date. Delete it and then download the latest from HijackThis_sfx.exe

Double-click on the file you've just downloaded and click on the UnZip button to install the program. It will self-extract to the C:\Program Files\HijackThis\ folder by default.

Then post a fresh log and let us know how the machine is behaving.

All clean.

I suggest you defrag that hard drive to speed things up even more and then follow these simple steps to keep yourself safe and secure in the future.

Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and renable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and renable system restore here:

Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

or

Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from the tutorial above after rebooting.

Clean out ALL Temp Files

This process will clean out your Temp files and your Temporary Internet Files. Please do both steps:

Step 1: Delete Temp Files
To clean out your temp files, click on Start and then run, and type %temp% and press the ok button.

This should open up the temp directory that your machine uses. Please delete all files that are found there. If you get an error when deleting a file, skip that file and delete all the others. If you had trouble deleting a file, reboot into Safe Mode and follow this step again. You should now be able to delete all the files.

Step 2: Delete Temporary Internet Files
Now I want you to open up Internet Explorer, click on the Tools menu and then Internet Options. At the General tab, which should be the first tab you are currently on, click on the 'Delete Files' button and put a checkmark in 'Delete Offline Content'. Then press the OK button. This may take quite a while, so don't be alarmed if it takes a while.

Finally, and definitely the MOST IMPORTANT step, click on the following tutorial and follow each step listed there:

Simple and easy ways to keep your computer safe and secure on the Internet

Hi John,

Many thanks again, I'm sure my PC is a lot cleaner now, and - touch wood - IE seems to be working normally again! Very useful tips for the future, I have printed them out and will refer to them regularly. I shall certainly make a small donation for your trouble!

I do have one other problem with the PC: every time I open Outlook Express (v.6) I got a box appearing with a log-in prompt. This has my username & password details already included, and clicking OK only causes it to reappear the same way. If I click Esc, I get another box with the following:

There was a problem logging onto your mail server. Your Password was rejected. Account: 'pop3.blueyonder.co.uk (1)', Server: 'pop3.blueyonder.co.uk', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92

If I then click Esc again, this goes away and I can access my mail as normal, but it's quite frustrating to have to clear both these boxes every time. My wife shares the account, but doesn't get this when she switches the identity to use it - I suppose I get it because I'm the default mailbox user. Any further advice on this?

Best wishes,

Dan

Hi Dan, you'd be better posting the latter problem in the email forum to be honest.

Ps Thanks for the pint !!
