I need assistance with two programmes. I am trying to run de-frag which is restarting saying drive properties changing , this is taking approx 9 hours to reach 2%. When running scan disc on thorough and repair faults i keep getting a message " another programme is writting to this drive. I cancel getting this message but this again takes hours to run at last point 17 hours to get to approx 36%.

For a much quicker de-frag, I recommend downloading the FREE Power Defrag 2.00 Lite programme from www.e-technik.com. This programme takes control of your PC and reboots twice. The first reboot is to disable any screensavers and other programmes so it can use all of the memory for itself. After de-frag is complete, the second reboot enables screensaver and other programmes and returns your freshly de-fragged PC to you.

I find Zone Alarm gives me this problem if it is not closed down. Also make sure that properties box you used to open defrag (if you opened it that way) must also be closed down. Good luck.

If you press "ctrl-alt-delete" and close down all progs EXCEPT explorer and SYSTRAY you should find the progs run OK, a program running in the background(even though you may not know it!)will change your drive contents.

i have an epsom c20 stylus when i try to print your web pagers the computer freezes and the printer wont work but when i print just anything else it works ok.is it because there are to many pages to download

These pages are very large and you may well be overloading either the printer or the PC. Try selecting the first few pages only (in the print dialog, select pages and enter pages 1 to 2 for example) and see if that helps. If it does then you might need more memory in the PC.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to find the correct driver for an ATI 3D RAGE PRO 4mb graphics card.(yes it's an old one!!). I have tried the ATI site, drivershq, driverzone etc. and the driver they all suggest is for the "rage pro" not 3D rage pro, Thanks....

As it is an old card, it might be worth popping it into the machine and see what Windows makes of it (it may have a driver already). Is there a driver for an 8Mb card? If so try that one although I have to say that 4Mb may not be enough for today's resource hungry software. Hope this helps.

Scheduled Tasks. Can anyone please help. I try to run the Scheduled Task on my Windows 98SE and whilst I have all items scheduled they appear to cancel out and I repeatedly receive 'missed' for the scheduled times. I regularly go into the Advanced box on the Scheduled Tasks and often this has reverted to 'stop scheduled tasks' even though I had clicked on 'start' previously. I assume that I am making an elementary mistake somewhere but where I do not know. Any help very much appreciated. Dennis

I have recently upgraded to a 800mhz Duron (If you think that is slow you should have seen what I had before!)with 120mb ram (8mb has seemingly gone to the on-board graphics card) and a 30G hard drive. I am using windows 98. My trusty HP Deskjet 720c printer runs in series with my HP Scanjet 3400c scanner and is connected as per my old system. Unfortunately the printer has slowed down considerably since the upgrade and takes an age before it starts to print. Even when it eventually does decide to do something it stops and starts and I cannot do anything else on the computer whilst it is thinking about printing. I now have two USB connections and could connect via one of them if that would work but would obviously have to purchase a parallel to USB connector first. Where do I start?
David Bremner - Aberdeen - Tue May 21 23:41 2002

Have you tried the printer on its own without the scanner? If this helps then you may have to live with it. Alternatively, try an updated printer driver from the HP web site and see if this improves matters.

I had a similar problem with Windows 98 - running winconfig and switching off fast shut down seemed to help. Alternatively, check that power saving has been enabled in the BIOS. If still no luck then please leave another message stating some more details about your PC, what is attached to it (scanners, printers etc), whether it has USB and the version of Operating System and I'll try to help further.

Can anyone help with a "no sound" problem? In device manager my soundblaster audio pci legacy device is showing a yellow exclamation mark --if I remove it and reboot it disappears but soon returns. TIt says cannot find any free DMA CODE 12 but on checking there are no conflicts showing and says all is working ok. Have checked and drivers all up to date. Problem suddenly appeared 2 days ago - haven't changed or installed anything new and don't know what to try next. Thanks Ann

I recently had problems playing audio files.I could play each track individually but the CD wouldn't autorun or play the CD from start to finish.I ensured that the appropriate boxes were ticked (Auto Insert Notification and Play Audio CD's Automatically in Tweak U1)I also checked that the Registry entry was OK as advised by the Microsoft Knowledge Base.I then decided to uninstall/reinstall Soundblaster to see if this cured the problem.During reinstall it said that it could not find the following files:- sbpci.sys;ctpcir.dll;sbioctl.exe and sbres16.dll .These must be to do with Windows Device Manager as this is now blank and I cannot get any sound.I have reinstalled ME ( not a clean install) to try and recover the files but it even asked for them during install and a couple more.To the best of my knowledge I have not deleted them and they are not on the computer at all as far as I can make out.I reformatted the HD recently and installed Soundblaster with no problem.Could someone please point me in the right direction as it is driving me nuts trying to think of ways round it.Thank You

Open Notepad (Go to Start | Programs | Accessories | Notepad)
Copy and paste the following RED text below into the Notepad you have just opened:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.htc] "Content Type"="text/x-component"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\text/x-component] "CLSID"="{3050f4f8-98b5-11cf-bb82-00aa00bdce0b}" "Extension"=".htc"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLASSES\.htc] "Content Type"="text/x-component"

Now save the documents as a reg document, by clicking File | Save As .

Change the Save as type to All Files, Now name it exactly sysresrep.reg in My Documents

Now open My Documents and double click on the sysresrep.reg file

It will ask you whether you wish to continue, click YES

Reboot your computer

There is a possible reason that space allocated to the Restore Point file is small. The file is overwritten by successive restore points.
Go to Start | Control Panel | System | System Restore tab

Select a drive from the Available drives box by clicking it, and then click Settings. If you have only one drive or partition, it is selected for you.

In the Drive settings box, move the Disk space to use slider to change the disk space allocation for System Restore. You can't exceed 12 percent of the available disk space.

If it is already at maximum, which I suspect it is, It would be worth going to the System Restore Calendar, and checking on the DATES which are bolded. It doesn't necessarily create a restore point everyday if you have your computer on all the time and you may have to go back a few days

Further to the earlier message, when first I started my 'puter after reinstalling I got the message Files not found c:\win\system.dat and c:\windows\user.dat. Howewver after yet another reinstall, this message no longer appears and the computer seems! to work OK despite the sfc message. Could the dat files have a bearing on this.
Keith - oldham - Sun May 19 10:35 2002
reply

Try this Keith
Check your system for an existing SYSTEM.DAT file using the following steps:

Go to Start | Programs | Accessories | Command Prompt type the following command in to see if SYSTEM.DAT is present:
attrib system.dat

If the SYSTEM.DAT file exists, proceed with steps 3 and 4; otherwise, skip to step 5.

Use the MS-DOS ATTRIB command to remove the Read-Only, System, and Hidden attributes of the SYSTEM.DAT file:
attrib system.dat -r -s -h (type this exactly, with the spaces!)

Rename the SYSTEM.DAT file to SYSTEM.BAD with the following command:
ren system.dat system.bad (Again, Note the spaces)

Reboot your computer. During the boot process, if Windows 98 cannot find the Registry file, it uses SYSTEM.DA0. If this file works well, it is renamed to SYSTEM.DAT.

PS: Do the same for User.dat, but substitute User for System in the above instructions

Boy, are you in for some fun Stuarty :S.
Are you ready? Then I'll begin. I must warn you this NOT for the faint hearted!!!

I will give you the order in which to do, it then how to do each task

Remove the computers' power pack
Remove the palm rest
Remove the internal (real time clock battery or RTCB for short)
Clear the password
Put the RTCB back
Put keyboard back
Put Palm Rest back
To remove the Palm Rest

Turn the computer upside down with the front facing forward
Remove the four screws nearest to you that secure the palm rest to the base
Turn the computer the right way up with the front facing forward again.
Open the computer
Press forward on the back edge of the palm rest between the RIGHT side of the space bar and the RIGHT Alt key to disengage the Palm rest from the base
Slowly lift up the back edge of the Palm rest until the RTCB and Touch Pad cables prevent it from lifting any farther.
While holding the Palm rest at a 45o angle, slide the front edge towards you away from the base
After the front edge of the palm rest clears the base, swing the front edge up and back
Removing the Battery

The RTCB should now be visible. Remove it for half an hour
Put the computer back together in exact reverse of the above.
When you restart your computer, do NOT use the computers battery, but use the AC mains power. Don't insert the battery at this time.

Turn on the computer.

Iain, I have followed your instructions but when it comes to powering the laptop up without the battery i am unable to get any power. However i am able to get power from the mains if i put the battery back in!. I know you said that i shouldn't put it back in but that is the only way i will get power. I read on the compaq web site that there is a docking unit that comes with it, could this be the problem because the mains terminal on the laptop only seems to be powering it via the battery. Sorry for being a pain but have you any more suggestions. Much appreciated Iain.

Hi! help would be appreciated. I'll cut to the chase. I am unable to get any sound at all whether it be TV, Windows media player et al. I ran as many checks as possible and checked all my soundcard (soundblaster 1024) settings. When trying to install drivers from the backup disc I got with the PC halfway through, a message popped up "error at step 14.". When running the diagnostic on directX Clicking on sound, note at bottom says (user verification of software):HRESULT=0x00000000(unknown error). I have been trying to copy tapes to CD and hope against hope I have'nt damaged my sound card by overloading it. Is there anyway it can be tested for physical damage using the computer. If it transpires that a new card is necessary would it affect the overall performance of the PC (running an Athlon 800Mhz processor) if I replaced it with a later model (higher performance card).

Keith, "Overloading" a soundcard isn't actually going to affect the sound card. The only way hardware breaks is if a physical component fails, so the more likely cause is a software failure. Downloading DirectX may or may not solve the problem, but it is worth trying simply to rule out a directX Problem, Also try an update on your sound card driver. If either of these fail to solved the problem, then you may have to consider a component failure. There should be no problem putting in a PCI soundcard.

Allan, I found this in the Symantec Knowledge base
Situation:
You are upgrading the operating system (OS) and want to know whether special preparations are required for Norton SystemWorks (or other Symantec products).

Solution:
In most cases, changes to operating systems will make significant changes to system files, some user-dependent files, and key system components used by other programs. This is especially true when upgrading from Windows 98/Me to Windows NT/2000/XP. For these reasons, it is necessary to uninstall all Symantec software before upgrading the operating system. Before reinstalling, examine the product specifications to ensure that it is supported under the upgraded OS. The following list indicates which versions of Norton SystemWorks are supported under the various versions of Windows.

Norton SystemWorks 2002: Windows 98, Windows Millennium Edition (Me), Windows NT4-SP6, Windows 2000, Windows XP Home/Professional Norton SystemWorks 2001: Windows 95B, Windows 98, Windows Millennium Edition (Me) , Windows NT4-SP4, Windows 2000 Norton SystemWorks 2000: Windows 95B, Windows 98

iain, have uninstalled and reinstalled, sys works is 2002,could some part of 98 still be holding back the installation of xp,hence that it cannot recognise xp.if i run from the disk it seems ok.but as it is installed i keep getting the same result.would a format and start again be the solution,or is there something in the registry that could alter this?
allan - northants - Fri May 17 08:54 2002

Allan, I would suggest that you uninstall Works completely, then download a REg cleaner such as this one, and remove all references to System Wworks, just be VERY careful what you delete. Then try reinstalling WORKS. If this doesn't work, then I'm afraid that weary road of re-format and re-install will have to be the one you travel

Alan, Go to the Syamantec website, and go to downloads. I think there are a number of patches that you might want to install for Sys Works to work properly on XP

Sorry, it's actually called WS2_32.dll, and now even version 2.6 won't work, citing the same thing. I've uninstalled it and tried again, but, despite installing the icons and program folders, it won't start the actual program. Help!

Click Start | Run, type in sfc and press Enter
In the Specify the system file you would like to restore field, type
c:\windows\system\jdbgmgr.exe

and hit Enter

In the RESTORE FROM field, type in the path to your WINDOWS CAB files, most likely to be
c:\windows\options\cabs

(if you have to use your Win 98 disc, d:\win98 where d is the drive letter assigned to your CD-ROM)

Click OK and continue with the restore function.

Hi all, I am in an area where broadband is sadly not available yet and I want to speed up my computer for all applications including browsing web pages. As I see it I have 2 fairly easy options (in theory) 1) to update my RAM, I have 64MB at present 2) to buy a faster processor, I have Celeron 750 at present My question is, where is the best place to by extra RAM, is it easy to install and will it speed up my web experience? Also, can you buy a faster processor, where and can you install it yourself (will this speed up my computer?) I have also considered a bigger hard drive (10Gb currently), if you buy a bigger hard drive , how do you keep all the information on your current one, do you install them together? Thanks to anyone who can help me with these issues
david - nottingham - Wed May 15 07:46 2002

you could try idsn for the browsing web pages speed up and I dont know about the ram but try http://www.crucial.com and as to the prosessorquestion, yes but I don't reccomend upgrading to pentium 4, the fastest at the moment because you will need to buy new ram, a new motherboard, a new power supply and a new case and the hard drive won't work as well either most likley so if you really want to, if you want a pentium 4 computer a new one is a much cheaper and eiser option and for the hard drive question, you need to set the new hard drive to slave mode by setting it's jumper. all the best sam P.S I don't know how to set the jumper on the hard drive, am not too good on computers, red this out of a book

Hi. I use to have all files in my software present in the PROGRAM FILES folder available from START/ALL PROGRAMS Unfortunately now I only have some of those, although they are all available in the PROGRAM FILES folder. I know I can pin the individual software to the start menu (not the START/ADD PROGRAM), but what I would like is to have, once again, the content of the PROGRAM FILES folder available in START/ALL PROGRAMS. Can someone tell me how to do that? Thanks

Vince, this is probably a daft question, but is there a double headed arrow at the bottom of your programs list, that looks like a double V.
If so, click on it and your other programs should appear. If this is the case, your system will have hidden your least used programs

Hi. I would appreciate any help with my problem. I was downloading checking for Windows XP updates when my system crashed. Not been able to shut it down I had to switch it off and on again. After booting I found a pretty unstable system which did not allow me to connect on the internet + could not be shut down + start did not work properly. I tried to run disk doctor but, althoug it found some problems with security descriptors could not fix them because the HD was under windows control. I then scheduled a full disc check after rebooting and re-install (upgrade option) windows XP. I went to pcpitstop to do a full pc check and got a red flag on my HD. Apparently its uncached is running at only 25% of the norlam speed (1.12MB/s). I then checked the level of de-fragmentation and it came out that only 6% of data were defragmented although over 1000 files were defragmented. I really would like to go back to normal but I do not know how to do that. Can somebody help please?

I have been successfully downloading updates and small applications from e.g., Cnet, ZDnet etc., and other useful sites for a couple of years. In the last few days, when I attempt to download, I get a screen with just the Quicktime (I think the Quictime 32) logo - a sort of clock thing - and the computer hangs. No download dialogue, nothing. Any ideas? I use Windows 98SE/IE5. P.S. Great site which I read regularly, but have never had to ask a question before!

There are two reasons that this could be.
It is still there but has been hidden. Is there a little arrow at the side of your Quicklaunch bar, if so click on it and additional QL icons will appear.
it has been deleted
Left Click once on the IE icon on your desktop,Keep your finger on your mouse button and drag it to your quicklaunch bar at the bottom, until you see a bar. Let go of your mouse button

You need to check if your sound card has been associated with recording.

Go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Sounds & Multimedia
Click the Audio tab
In the Sound Recording section, change the preferred device to that of your sound card. If it won't change and it is not your sound card in the window, then you need to re-install your sound card
If it is already set to your soundcard, click the volume button.
check the Select on Microphone.
Hope this helps, but post back if there any problems
