Office 2003 Speech recognition impresses
      #155932 - Sun Jan 30 2005 04:14 PM

I just downloaded a 60 day trial of Office 2003 Standard. It's 216 Mb - that's 30 mins on a 1Mb connection. So if you are on dial-up it's going to take a long time! 10 hours?

You really need a quality headset for it to work well. I have this one that does the job.

The speech recognition tools are very good. As long as you talk clearly and reasonably slowly, it works well. It also lets you switch to voice command so you can tell it to do tasks like "File", "Save", "Exit" etc. You have to train it to get better at recognising your voice by reading a few little extracts to it - like a bit of Bill Gates' The Road Ahead!

This is a major step forward, especially useful for people who find it difficult to type. The speech recognition also works in Internet Explorer.

I'm on day 1 of my trial, but it's looking good and I might have to upgrade from Office 2000!

Chris

Interesting - I used to have Dragon Naturally Speaking when I was a student, but it drove me nuts! You had to read huge amounts of text, and it was rarely right!

Already have Office 2003 and a quality headset, so will give it another shot.

Cheers,
Gusmac
