I have been running a http: server for my family to access files on my pc, but lately they have not been able to get in. Just by chance I noticed the programme was running on a new I.P. address. I tried changing it back to the old one, which I've always had & it's not working.
Sure enough a visit to whatismyisp.com confirmed my I.P. address has indeed changed??
I thought this was set by your service provider? Is it possible they have changed it?
I also noticed I had to re-enter my logon details to get on this site... I hope it hasn't messed up my internet as well.
Is this something I should be worried about? or am I over-reacting???

Which ISP is it ? Some of them use more than one block of addresses, so you can have completely different IP's on different days.

I seem to have a different IP address for every session. It doesn't appear to be a problem, though. Madeline.

Most ISP's assign dynamics ip addresses that change regularly.

The first numbers are usually constant, like 168.xxx.xxx.xxx , so at first glance it always look the same, though the last numbers are variable. However some ISP's can use blocks like 123.xxx.xxx.xxx or 47.xxx.xxx.xxx , which is very noticeable, and makes you wonder, though there is no problem.

thanks for all the replys, The number has changed completely, not just a few digits. Everything seems to ok though. My provider is telewest broadband. Just got a bit worried that it suddenly changed after a year or so, but you've put my mind at rest now. Better to be sure though eh?

Thanks, RichieP. Mine changes every time I go on-line, but it's never been a problem for me. Madeline.

that's because you are on dial up madeline. you are assigned an IP no every time you log on. where if you are on broadband it usually stays the same.

BT Broadband is a dynamic address that's assigned differently every day. The reason I have had intermittent connection problems this last four months is when the assigned addresses have been in the same IP range.

I would advise you to ring your ISP to check As Madeline states Dynamic addresses do change but, you need to be sure as Som ISP's use static addresses tha dont usually change. I hav a static address with MY ISP.
I don't trust Camels, or anyone else who can go for a week without a drink.

So, with BT (as I am), it's not only on dial-up that it's changed? Madeline.

Unless you pay extra, BT and BTOpenworld give you dynamic IP addresses. Every time you connect, you get a new IP address. If you leave your PC connected 24-hours a day, it is likely that your IP address will stay the same all the time. However, if you turn off your PC when you're not using it (as I'm sure you do), then you will get a new IP address each time you connect.
It doesn't make any difference whether you're connected with dial-up or "broadband", it's just that with a "broadband" connection you're more likely to leave it connected all the time.
If you want a static IP address without paying any more, then use PlusNet.

Thjat's right, Rob. I get a new IP address every time I connect. I hadn't realised that the same thing applied to BB if you don't leave it connected all the time. Madeline.

You have no control over your own IP address. Your ISP will allocate you either a static or dynamic address depending on what they offer. If the ISP uses dynamic addressing you can normally pay more for a static address but it doesn't work the other way round. As a matter of interest, why do you want to change?

Do you know that we're all in line for succession to the throne? Really? Well, if forty-eight million, two hundred thousand, seven hundred and one people died I'd be Queen.

Nope. IP addresses are almost ALWAYS dynamic with ISP's. You can buy a static one, but anytime you disconnect and reconnect you're going to get a new IP. This doesnt happen as often with cable or dsl, but you still get bumped every so often and more than likely you will end up with a different address.
You'll either have to buy a static one, or just put up with telling them the new one all the time.
