There has been a lot of work on the Forums over the past few days and a number of updates have been released this afternoon. We hope you will notice an improvement in both speed and performance - please let me know if there isn't.

Thanks
Claire

So far so good.

But I'll be brutally honest if you'll allow.
The site now is lightening fast. I can't remember when it was faster. No server unavailable errors as of yet. Lets hope it stays that way.

However, when I disable AdBlocker Plus, it's slow. Very slow to load for me. Don't get me wrong, it's not 10, 20 or 30 seconds as before, but the lag to load is a turn off for me.
If i didn't have, or more importantly wasn't allowed to use an advert blocker, I wouldn't come to this web site.
I think we 'all' appreciate why the ads are there, but at the moment I/we have a choice not to see them and I/we hope that choice remains.

Well done for 'fixing' the problem which pushed me and no doubt others away.
Good to be back.

Claire, sorry for my previous rather thoughtless post on this thread.

Absolutely! Even with my slow connection pages are loading almost instantly. Many thanks to David and his colleagues for all their hard work on our behalf and thanks to you of course.

One small thing, I'd love to know why this site will only display properly when I'm using Firefox 3.5.xx if I disable Adblock Plus. Any ideas please? It must be an incorrect setting somewhere but I don't know what. It doesn't happen on the forums, I can leave Adblock Plus enabled here.
I don't have display problems when using other browsers.

Would you be able to send a screenshot of how the Forums appear for you with Adblock enabled please Fusion to webuser@ipcmedia.com?

Thanks
Claire

Screen shot on way.

It is customised to my preferences.
I suspect Madeline may have Adblock blocking very aggressively individual pages or other areas of the website. It can be customised per page.

I hope the request isn't used to counter any ad blocking tactics in the near future.

Not by any action on my part. I haven't changed anything on ABP at all and the whole of the site was fine with ABP enabled until the recent update of the site.

The forums are the only part of the site unaffected for me.

I am aware that you can customise per page and I have tried either that or I disable ABP temporarily by middle-clicking on its icon in the Toolbar.

However, my point is that I shouldn't have to do this. If I wanted to see ads, I wouldn't have ABP in the first place.

This isn't particularly aimed at you Fusion, although we have similar concerns, rather it's for WU. Clearly there's something wrong at their end since, at least as far as I'm concerned, this problem didn't manifest itself until after the update.

I hope this gets resolved soon.

Madeline

Are you seeing something like this -->> Click for Image <<--

I have achieved this by blocking, amongst other items, the following:

http://www.webuser.co.uk/css/packed/1253623415/pluginCommon/layouts/___layouts.css,pluginCommon/layouts/layout.css,pluginCommon/ipc.css,pluginCommon/icon.css,pluginCommon/list.css,pluginPolls/themes/base/polls.css,pluginCommon/themes/base/ads.css,pluginCommon/themes/base/global.css,pluginCommon/themes/shiney/global.css,pluginCommon/widgets/tabs.css,pluginRatings/rating.css,pluginMagazine/themes/shiney/whatsin.css,local.css

----and----

http://www.webuser.co.uk/js/pluginOmniture/sitecatalyst/H.19.4.js

When I unblock the above, I return a particular page to ‘normal’ like this -->> Click for Image <<--

As you will be aware, and for the benefit of others reading this post, Adblock Plus is not just an advert blocker, it can, and does block many other items in the page such as images and custom themes/frames which have been included by the web page designer.

Perhaps it might be wise to pick a page that displays poorly for you, unblock everything on that page, and reintroduce one at a time then refresh the page to see if you have the desired preference.
The way to do this is to right click the Adblock icon (I have mine showing permanently in the Status bar for instant access) -> Open blockable items -> Right click each blocked item in red -> Disable filter 'http://www.webuser.co.uk/*****whatever*****'.
Note: not 'Disable filter on Webuser'. This will affect all items across the board on the Webuser site and not just what your looking at.

When you decide to 'block' an item, in the Filter rule window note the options. A wild card is available to affect a pattern on the site. This option, if selected, is not always wanted.

Inadvertently (excuse the pun) blocking the wrong items can render a website useless. It is trial and error with complex web page designs and much experimenting is sometimes needed to achieved the desired results.

I hope this helps.

Fusion,
I'd better be quick with this in case the site stops working again - see my post below.

Thank you very much, my problem now seems to be solved!
Yes I was seeing pages exactly as in your 1st screen shot. What I did probably wasn't the 'wise' course, but may have been quicker. I went to a page that displayed as you showed, opened the blockable items in ABP, found the 1st entry you showed above in green and created an 'Exception ' rule for it in ABP. I repeated it on other pages where it was necessary. I found the 2nd green item above, but it was never blocked.

I originally thought that the problem lay with a setting in ABP, but I couldn't figure it out. Sorry for blaming WU for that one!

Anyway it's great to be able to go anywhere on this site and have pages displaying properly, as in your 2nd screen shot, with ABP enabled.

I'm very grateful for your help Fusion, many thanks to you.

I had the following error message at around 4AM:

"Proxy Error

The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server.
The proxy server could not handle the request GET /forums/ubbthreads.php.

Reason: Error reading from remote server

Additionally, a 502 Bad Gateway error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request."

I also had a long delay in loading a page 24 hours previously, but I gave up before I got an error message. It's still very quick when it works properly though!

So did I. Mostly like the one shown in Fusion's 1st screen shot above, but one or two like the 3rd one. I haven't seen the 2nd one (yet).

It wasn't just last night, this has been happening quite a lot in the last few days.
