What’s happening with Webuser Forums. Is it just at my end. Or is it a wider problem?

The following is an everyday occurrence since the upgrade, for me at some point.

Open browser. Try to open Webuser forum page – can take 15 to 400 seconds to load. This is widely variable.
When accessed, scroll down forum; try to access a specific forum. Loading for 30 seconds. Server error.
Refresh. Loading 30 seconds. Server unavailable due to high demand.
Refresh. The same.
Shut browser down. Restart. Try to access specific forum. Type reply to a query. Preview. Server error. Server unavailable.
Shut down browser. Delete all instances of Webuser cookies.
Open browser. Login.
Scroll down forum; try to access a specific forum. Loading for 30 seconds. Server error.
Refresh. Loading 30 seconds. Server unavailable.
Reload. Retype my reply preview. Submit. Loading. Server error. Server unavailable due to high demand.
Shut browser down. Try another browser. Repeat the above. No change.
Shut browser down. Try another browser. Repeat the above. No change.
Go make cup of tea.
Open browser. Access Webuser forum, reply to query, preview, submit. Bingo, no problems at all.
No problems for variable lengths of time.
Return to Webuser. Repeat all of the above.

This happens everyday.
It’s frustrating to say the least.
I’m sure there’s some who’ll reply and say that “they” have no problems at all. Great for them.

Just to let you know that “some” are having terrible problems with the upgrade.

I'm one of the former - apart from occasional delays, but nothing as dramatic as you have encountered.

Clearly you're one of the latter. Anyone else having terrible problems as described?

I'm not having 'terrible problems', just one weird little quirk that I mentioned earlier on this thread:
Quote:

I'm using Firefox 3.5.2 and one thing I've noticed is that, although the forums display normally, the rest of the site doesn't unless I either use IE Tab or disable Adblock Plus. The site is allowed on NoScript.

I have no idea why this happens and it's odd that the forums are fine with Adblock Plus enabled, but the rest of the site isn't. I also have to disable ABP to get the WU news items that I access via the RSS feed to display properly.
This isn't a major problem and it's dealt with easily by enabling/disabling ABP. All the same, it's a bit bizarre and it didn't happen before the site was upgraded. It doesn't happen with any other browser either. Any suggestions for a solution will be very welcome.
I hope Fusion gets his problem sorted soon, it must be infuriating and frustrating for him and I wish I had an answer to it.

Oh dear, despite what I said above, I've just had 'Internal Server Error' and 'High Demand' messages for the best part of an hour. Ho-hum!

Well, S*ds Law is at play today; I too have had a problem getting onto the forum, no error messages as yet just loooong delays. Yet tracert on the server showed no issue.

Difficult to know what the cause is when it's so sporadic and inconsistent, but I'm sure Claire is passing on the info.

Thanks for letting us know people.

Hi all,

I'm David and I work in the techie department which looks after Webuser (amongst others).

Claire has been passing on your comments and we have addressed some of them; and taken on board your comments.

The main issue I'd like to get to the bottom of most of all is the Internal Server Error and High Demand messages some of you are receiving. Is this an issue localised only to the forum (i.e do other sections of the site, such as News work ok?)

To allow us to best investigate the problem, we need a little more information from you.

If at anytime these problems occur, please take a note of the page you were trying to access, the error displayed, and most importantly, the time of when it happened. Please drop the details to me in a PM

I may come back and ask for further information from you, but I think it's a good start to help solving our problems.

Thanks,
David

What intrigues me is the apparent 'High Demand' the forums were experiencing earlier! At 4.30 AM??

It might be as well for people to type their posts on a Notepad and then copy and paste them to the forum (or the other way round). That way, they wouldn't have to retype posts if they experience any of the problems mentioned above.

Hi David,

This is a new problem for me and it happened last night at about this time (4.30 AM). I remember it happened once before recently, but it didn't last for long and I can't recall what time it was.
Yesterday, it was the whole site that was affected for me, not just the forums. Sorry not to have more helpful info for you.

Madeline

Something similar just happened for about 35-40 minutes, but with a different error message:

PROXY ERROR

The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server.
The proxy server could not handle the request POST /forums/addpost.php.

Reason: Error reading from remote server

Additionally, a 502 Bad Gateway error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Same time for me!

The "List" feature in forum replies appears not to be working properly. The listed items are not indented with a "bullet" as they used to be, but simply put on to a separate line in a slightly larger font.

Just to let you know I'm still having server errors and long loadings.
I managed to -->> record the error <<-- at just turned 7 pm this evening while trying to access the Security news & updates forum.

I'm still finding the forums excruciatingly slow to load much of the time, even at about 7 o'clock in the morning.

I still get various error pages from time to time - I had one a little while ago in fact. Pages usually load well, but sometimes take ages, even for a slow connection like mine!
I hope that these difficulties will be resolved soon, because otherwise I think that fewer people will come here. In fact that seems to be the case already as there don't seem to be as many new posts as used to be the case.
It's tiresome to be wondering all the time if you'll be able to complete a post before you click on 'Continue' or 'Submit' and get an error page and it isn't surprising if both existing and potential users get fed up and go elsewhere.
Hardly a situation that WU wants to inflict on people I think!
This is a 'Feedback' forum and it's your turn to give us some overdue feedback on this extremely aggravating situation. Thank you!

Sorry everyone - I know the problems with the Forums are very frustrating at the moment but I can assure you that they are being investigated as a matter of high priority.

Can I remind you please that David Bright requested above that you PM him with details of any problems - he has only received two PMs.

I will provide any updates as soon as I get any.

Claire

Claire

I tried initially to PM David when we were asked. I could not proceed due to ‘Server unavailable due to high demands’.
I have tried at different times and continue to get the above.

I have just had 3 Server unavailable errors trying to post this after a 30 second loading.

Thanks for your reply Claire. I haven't sent a pm to David yet and I'll try to remember to do so later. However, are the problems we're experiencing not well enough documented on this thread already?

David works for the digital team that looks after more than 30 brands at IPC and isn't always able to check the Forums as regularly as the Web User team. While I can keep cutting and pasting the errors reported, David asked for these to be reported via PM as he will get an email alert containing this information.
By enabling David's team to monitor key patterns of these error messages it will give them a better understanding of the types of requests which are causing the slowness and errors.

Claire
