Connecting to the Internet on a new laptop
      #99140 - Mon Aug 16 2004 11:10 PM

I have just bought a Dell Inspiron 1000 to use for university from September. I want to set up a dial up connection that I can plug into any phone line at any time; I do not want to pay monthly charges as I will mainly be using either my home Broadband service or the LAN at the college, instead I want to be able to browse the internet as and when I want and pay for the call charges. The laptop comes with AOL and BT Internet ready to install, but both of these are subscription services and therefore exactly what I dont want. Is there a good browser software that I can install that will allow me to connect while paying only for the BT call charges?

Most ISPs offer PayAsYouGo services. Personally, I wouldn't touch BTOpenworld with a bargepole, but would recommend PlusNet as an ISP that gives excellent customer service. I've only used its broadband package, but its PayAsYouGo service looks OK to me.

Virgin.net have a 24/7 dial up package for £12.49 per month. I know two people who have used Virgin as an ISP and both were satisfied.
You can order a registration CD from here (Click on red link).

I'd agree with the other posters regarding AOL and BT - AOL software will take over your laptop and is very hard to eradicate.

Search Google for Free ISP in the UK and there are a bunch of them to try - as they are Pay As You Go there are no contracts or anything so you can sign up for 2 or 3 and see which is best. Just make sure that they allow you to send email from their network using any email address - some don't allow it and so you might then be forced to use their email addresses which is a problem when you then change ISP.

A few that I have tried and are good are

Aardvaak *great customer support
UKU
PAYGi

However there are plenty of others to have a go at. I've tended to go for the smaller ones as I seem to get better support - got fed up waiting for the big ones to answer emails 3 days after I sent them (if they even ever replied!)

I use this company for my mobile phone service and they are remarkably cheap. They also offer a PAYG service and their BB service looks pretty good as well. It says £20 a month, free connection and free modem with no download limit which sounds too good to be true. Might be worth a look.

Do you know that we're all in line for succession to the throne? Really?
Well, if forty-eight million, two hundred thousand, seven hundred and one people died I'd be Queen.
