I just bought a new PC. Eveything was fine until yesterday when I tried to connect to the net and got a message saying No dial tone detected, etc. Checked the connections - OK.
So I set up my old PC and tried to connect and it worked fine (which is why I can post this message). From which I conclude that there's nothing wrong with the phone socket but - despite the error message - something in the way the modem's configured.
I'm running Windows XP which is new to me. How do I diagnose the problem and put it right?
I can't spend the rest of my life with a moribund PC on my dining table!

Which company are you using as your internet provider? If you know the access number (which the modem rings for access) then try this test.
1. Click on Start and select Run. 2. Type hypertrm then click OK. 3. Type test then click OK. 4. Enter your access number. 5. Click Dial:
After a successful test, you should get the prompt: Login

Thanks for trying, but I don't get a 'test' message when I run hypertrm - just an invitation to set up a new account. And when I tried to do so (I'm on Freeserve Anytime), I just get the No Dial Tone Message.
This is so frustrating.
Any other ideas?

Have you tried connecting a phone to the "line" socket of the modem? and check if there is any noise? If none I think a reinstallation of the modem drivers might be worthwhile If you have got them? If you are using the same modem for both computers the driver file for the modem is held on the computer not the modem (Seen some people think everything is already to go out of the box) so copy the driver to floppy and paste it on your new computer ready to be read by the modem Should work ok now?

I managed to sort it out - although I'm not entirely sure why it worked.
I went to Control Panel/Phone and Modem Options/Modems/Properties/Modem and unchecked the box which said 'Wait for dial tone before dialing' - and it now works.
Thanks again for your efforts!

Here is some additional settings to check out Open Internet Explorer >Tools>Internet Options>Connections tab Is your ISP listed here? And is it ticked "Always dial my default connection"? If it is set to either of the other settings you could experience no connect or dialup errors.

Hi Charles,
I imagine that if you fixed it by unchecking "Wait for dial tone before dialling" then the problem was possibly BT's 1571 service.
When you have a message with the BT 1571 service it changes you dial tone from a constant tone to a broken tone ie beep--pause--beep--pause etc instead of beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep!
Therefore when you try to connect if you get the pause bit of the tone the modem may think there is no tone.
Hope this makes sense and is of some use to someone.
