I came across this article that summarises the results of usability surveys about all sorts of topics from the rather obvious 'where do you expect to find the 'Home' button?', through recommended page dimensions and fonts to the more esoteric, including how different cultures prefer things laid out in different ways.
It's rather long, rather dry and contains a few grammatical errors (from an English pov - maybe they are correct in the US!), but some of the info, especially towards the end, might be of interest to you.

http://psychology.wichita.edu/optimalweb/print.htm I think the page is formated for printing.
Heres a clickable link. Just a bit quicker and easier.

An superb article, but wouldn't the internet be boring if it were all designed the same way?

Yes the internet would become very boring. I think one of the best things to concentrate on is how accessible sites are. There are many people with poor eyesight and if a site is very dependant on graphics these people miss out because page readers don't work on graphical text.
A good place to visit is Web Accessibility Initiative. It's the best place to go to learn all about accessibility.

Thank for that Jonny.
I am currently researching accessibilty for people with sight problems, being one of them!, so this is very interesting. I am planning on redoing my site to use means for helping people with reduced/no site enjoy the experience, having now experienced it first hand.
cheers
