Tell a friend...
      #9398 - Sat Sep 06 2003 11:02 PM

I have been using Bravenet's 'Tell a friend' service on my websites for a few months, to help promote the sites. I didn't mind their small link back to Bravenet as a price to pay. Now however, they have updated it to a pop up window, which was ok until I tested it. I was immediately bombarded with pop up ads. I took it off my sites straight away, as I do not want my visitors pestered with pop ups. Does anyone know of another free provider of this service? As I said, I dont mind a small static ad, or link back to them, but no pop ups! Cheers, Whiz...

I haven't tested it out (yet) but you could try the tools at cooltaf.com.

Thanks Andy, It looked promising when I opened the link. I thought I would have a proper look later, so closed the window. What happened? Full screen size pop ups. I may take a closer look later, but I think they will be included.
Cheers anyway, Whiz...

Well, I have to say, this put me off straight away;

"How can Cooltaf.com provide this amazing service free?
To cover operational expenses, we have some advertisers that put banners and special offers in Tell A Friend page."

Ho-Hum.

Actually, I don't think it's too bad. You get a link to a seperate page, which does have some advertising on, and your users have to go through a second 'thank you' page before being offered a link back to your site. This has more ads on it, but in lieu of finding something for free that isn't supported by advertising, it's not too bad. On the bonus side, the pop-up ads that are on the main site don't seem to appear on your site if you use the service, it can provide handy stats on how many people have used it, and it includes a text link exchange system you can opt into to have your site appearing as one of the adverts.

If anyone can find a free service that does the same without any advertising support, I'd love to hear about it.

I take it that your site is free hosted. I'm going to implement such a service on my site soon and will be coding myself.

Even if you are free hosted you could still use your default email for sending the info surely. Or am I barking up the wrong tree.

No, it's not a free site. That's why I dont allow pop ups on it.
It's unlikely I could code anything from my default email (only a novice) as the senders name and email address has to be the site visitors.
I'll have a proper look at the link again, I may have been a bit hasty.
Cheers, Whiz...

Naah! Just had a good look. Their form is brilliant and I would gladly put a static advert on site to use it, but seventeen inch pop ups is a bit strong. There's advertising, and there's AAADDVEEEEERTIIIIISIIIING!

I don't know if this is of any use or if you would be willing to use such a method, but here goes.

There are ways to stop these pop ups. Maybe if you had your preferred tell a friend page load into a frame on your page and then use a script to kill the pop up. Heres some pieces of code that may be useful to you. I've not gone all the way through this site so I'm not sure it's definitely going to work for you, but thought I'd mention it.

I have to ask - not bad for whom? You, or the users? As a user, I object to these Tell a Friened, and always block them from my email. They usually harvest the email addresses you fill out, so you are actually condemning your friends to SPAM rather than doing them a favour.
