Null serial cable
      #91526 - Fri Jul 23 2004 01:03 PM

Please help! I'm not sure whether anybody can help me, but it's worth a go.

I need a 9-pin male-female serial cable with pins 1&2, 4&6, and 7&8 swapped. I have tried Maplin, RS, and my local computer shop, but can't find such a beast.

Rob

PS: Yes, I know I ought to get out more!
PPS: I also know that I can swap the cables over on a standard serial cable, but I don't have the co-ordination for soldering.

What is it for? Is it the same as RS485?

Nick

RS-232 and serial are the same. I think that RS-485 is something different.

I've found the Belkin F4A0956BLP, but I don't know what pins are swapped on this lead.

Edit: Sorry, I meant the Belkin F4A096BLP.

For five quid from Watford Electronics, I might as well just buy it and see whether it works.

Rob

Null modem cables are normally female-female 9 pin and I've got one of those. I think they are the same as a Laplink cable. What about just getting one of those and a gender bender.

Thanks for the idea. I had thought about that, but couldn't find a 9-pin gender bender. Watford Electronics has decided that it's unable to fulfil my order, so I'll need to look elsewhere.

Thanks for the advice gentlemen, but I've found out what's happened to the old lead. I'll get it back tomorrow.

If anybody is interested, Simply Computers sells the Belkin lead.

PS: Who can read the term "gender bender" and not think about Thailand?

Perhaps I should have described it as a 'ladyboy adaptor'.
