My OS is Windows ME. I have searched my Help files to see if I can set passwords for various files on my PC (it is a shared computer), but without success - it just tells me that I can set a password for the screensaver (why!?!?). Does anyone know if this is possible? Sorry if this seems a dumb question: that'll be because it is...

Why a password for a screen saver? It's a quick way of stopping the casual passer-by from accessing your PC. It's not full protection as a determined hacker could get past it but it's very useful in an office environment with lots of nosey people.
As to password protection for individual files, that will depend entirely on the nature of the accident ..... oops, got carried away with stupid TV adverts then. There is no overall system built into Windows but certain software does give you this feature. For example, you can password protect files in the Microsoft Office suite. You can also set the file attribute to be Read-Only but that is reasonably easy to change back.
What sort of files are you trying to protect.

The files are all Word or Works documents - but I can't find any option to set and use passwords.

Theres a link for some info. To password protect files I found the best thing to use was Bestcrypt, it creates a hidden partition that you can access if you know the password. Its very good

Possibly Winzip or similar zip programs will help, XP has a feature by sending files to Compressed (Zipped) Folder via a Right Click>Send To>Zip Folder>With the folder open>Click on File>Add Password to protect its contents.
Obviously not in ME (or is it?), hence my suggesting Winzip.

Only XP has built in Zip facilities. You can use the standard Winzip programme to achieve the same result.
To password protect files, it is important to specify the password AFTER opening or creating an archive and BEFORE adding the files.
Follow these steps to password protect files in an archive:
1. Open or create an archive. If you are using the New Archive dialog box, check the Add Dialog checkbox at the bottom of the dialog box. 2. In the Add dialog box, click the Password button, and type a password.

I know nowt about other Systems having arrived on the scene with XP Home installed by the Manufacturer.
What's always puzzled me (nowt out of the ordinary either), is Winzip was also installed. After a while curiosity got the better of me, having a look see it was a trial version. So why did they bother installing that when XP has it's own?
