Major problems
      #90201 - Sun Jul 18 2004 07:43 PM

Hello, hope someone can help me, have had around 24 trojan horses, which I cannot get rid of, put in the vault in AVG,
but when turned on comp today my computer has changed from 32Bit to 4Bit and if I go into Display Properties there is only 4Bit in there and all the apply button are in grey so that I cannot change any thing in there.

Have turned on in safe mode (not that I understand what safe mode is) and all is ok in there in Display Properties
Using XP Home, have Kerio firewall, Spybot and Spyware and did have AVG but binned it now

I do not understand computers, so please bear with me
Many thanks for reading this

Go to this page, and download 'Hijack This!'.

Unzip it, launch Hijack This, then press Scan, and press Save Log

This will generate a text file that will list all running processes, all applications that are loaded automatically when you start Windows, and more.

open that file
Go to Edit | Select all
Now click Edit | copy to copy it

Do not change anything just yet
Come back to the forum, Right Click and paste its contents here

Someone will come along and have a look at it, and advise you what still needs to be removed.

When you have been advised on your HijackThis log please download the following to stop most malware from getting into your p.c. in the first place:

Spywareblaster & Spywareguard.

I'm still not able to change from 4Bit to 32 Bit, apply are still in grey in control panel, appearance & themes,
Thanks

Went into safe mode and asked to bring up NETDC.EXE and it came up with file cannot be found
When I reload back onto the comp I get a message on my desktop saying (do you want windows to auto correct your sceen resolution & color depth setting, yes/no I say yes but nothing happens
Thanks

Make sure you have Set Windows to show Hidden Files & Folders, then reboot into safe mode again.

Also, uncheck the boxes for hiding known file extensions and hiding protected operating system files. We want to see it all. When we finish here, it would be a good idea to rehide the protected operating system files but leave the rest to be shown.

Delete C:\WINDOWS\System32\netdc.exe <-------- Delete this file.

You need to make a couple of changes to the registry too so Make a backup

Still in safe mode Click Start, and then click Run.

In the box type regedit then click OK

Navigate to the key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

In the right pane, delete the value:

"load32"="%System%\netda.exe..." If found.

Navigate to the key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

In the right pane, double-click:

Shell

Change:

explorer.exe %System%\netdc.exe

to:

explorer.exe

Exit the Registry Editor.

Now delete your Temporary Internet Files, be sure to also select delete all offline content, then empty your recycle bin.

Reboot into normal mode. Run one of the following on-line virus scans: Housecall or Bitdefender.

Post a fresh log and tell us how things are running.

I'm sorry but all this is too much for me, I'm in safe mode at the moment as I now cannot get on to the computer unless in safe mode as it keeps closing down, this computer belongs to my son who will be home on Wed so I will have to ask him if he knows how to get out of this mess.
maybe he will be able to follow your instructions
Thanks for you help

Hello,
I would like to thank you KangarooPoo for your help in this matter, just to let you know what is going on.

My son has reformatted the hard drive, and most things are now back to normal, just wanted to ask you if I now have enough cover to stop these trojans comming back.

Zone Alarm Firewall
AVG Antivirus
Spyware Blaster
Spybot - Search & Destroy

Should I also download "Spyware Guard"
Many Thanks
Astra

You already have Spywareblaster so ignore that bit:

To reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster and SpyWareGuard and IE/Spyad.

SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard are by JavaCool and both are free programs. SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed and consumes no system resources. SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

More info and download is available at:
SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
SpywareGuard: http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareguard.html

IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It is free.

More info and download is available at:
