ISP with overseas dial-up numbers
      #8733 - Tue Sep 02 2003 05:22 PM

I travel abroad a lot and, whilst I am there I collect my email using a lap-top connected via a mobile phone. It is slow and expensive, but it works. I currently use AOL as my ISP because they have dial-up numbers in pretty well every country in the world. The connection works well, but I hate their software.

Does anyone know of any other ISPs who have overseas numbers? I know CompuServe do, but their software is the same as AOLs and still lousy. Pipex do as well, but they don't cover Turkey or Croatia, two of the places I visit.

Never having tried it I don't know if it would work but can you not just dial the UK number of your ISP? I assume your mobile setup is such that you can call anywhere in the world. I appreciate it would be slow but you know that anyway.

Yes you can, but it is very expensive. I use a foreign SIM card so 'local' calls are only a few pence per minute. Calling back to the UK can cost 75p to £1.50 per minute depending upon where I am!

There is also an issue with 0800 or 0805 numbers. These cannot be called from abroad. Virgin.net do at least have a number that can be dialled from abroad, but then we are back to expense!

MedMan,

Have you tried dialling the 0800 numbers omitting the first zero?
I live overseas and can access these UK numbers. In fact this applies to all UK numbers that being with zero.
