Internet explorer/norton firewall
      #7982 - Thu Aug 28 2003 01:25 AM

I recently had to wipe my computer clean. After having re-installed norton internet security I have been having problem viewing any page (this page cannot be displayed). All was fine when I turned off the norton firewall. I have reduced the norton firewall setting to minimum but that doesn't seem to help. I also have uninstalled and re-installed internet security, however I still can't brose with norton firewall switched on.I am currentlybrowsing only with the XP firewall (is that one any good). . Many thanks

i got rid of norton av and installed avg, you can find it here . and as far as the xp firewall is concerned i don't think it is much use. you can d/load the free sygate firewall from here .
if i had known i would live this long, i would have taken better care of myself.

what version of norton do you run ?
i have win xp pro with the latest version of norton firewall
when i installed it i found certain web sites wouldnt load due to norton restrictions
if you open norton firewall and clic on options you will see a tab call web content in this page you can add the address of any web site you want to view and then make norton permit that site to load
hope that helps

I'm running on the latest version of NAV (I think, I bought it back in April)
Putting everything on individually would be very time consuming wouldn't it?
What I would like to know is why it worked fine and after I recovered my computer it won't work at all.
I am running on a german version of XP home but this didn't matter before.
Argh very frustrating.

i do know that the 2003 version of norton firewall will not run compatibly with xp's own firewall you would be wise to switch that off.
i had a few teething problems with n.f.w when i installed it but i find it ok it doesnt cause me too much probs. however there are a few web sites that will not load with n.f.w switched on
all i do is switch it off an try again if it loads with no problem then i simply go to options in n.f.w and add the site i visited (assuming i will be visiting again on a regular basis) to the web content permit list it doesnt take 2 mins to do and i find its worth it for the added security that the new version provides.
p.s with regard to it being ok before you will find that norton security have updated the firewall and virus so even tho you may have used the original CD.ROM disc to install it will update via the net when you re-install it.
i hope that is of some help im no expert but jus clocked that you had a similar problem that i had and mine runs fine now
good luck

it's not really a good idea to switch your firewall off while still on the net, i'm still getting pinged about 10 times a second a lot of them viruses.
Computers are like Old Testament gods; lots of rules and no mercy.
