Being with (BT Yahoo) I have a choice of two routes to connect, a - desktop icon BTOWAnytime or b - Start - 'Connect to' BTOW.
a - on connecting goes directly to BTYahoo log in page. b - Connecting allows me to choose Internet Explorer where my start page is Google.
Problem recently is, connecting to BTYahoo log in I'm getting 'Page not available' and consequently any other website I try. Not everytime but enough to concern me.
Disconnecting, reconnecting via b - no problem- IE/Google and anywhere else I wish to go.
Would appreciate any advice on why and what's required please.

It could be the BTYahoo site that's playing up. Have you tried just double-clicking the IE icon?
In addition, if you're on dial-up it might be worth checking the line, dial 17070 (use prefix 1470 if your number is withheld) and test the line. From what I remember you dial it, make a few key depressions, hang up and get a call back.
If you're still not happy, telephone the engineer on 151 and speak to him/her. If the Internet is only connecting at 20,000-40,000 bps ask if you are on DACS (means you are sharing a line). If you are on DACS ask VERY NICELY to have it removed as you need good access and you're paying good money. You could also ask to have the "gain" increased.
Check your line speed here

Right click on the two shortcuts and choose Properties. Compare the command line of the two to see what each one does. Print them out and then change one or the other to make it go where you want it to.

Thank you both for responding. I'm obliged.
Burr, have checked the line speed - 40.3kbps 4.8 k/bytes/sec. That appears my average.
I'll check out the other advice tomorrow (Monday) regarding shared line. I shall be as always, most polite, thanks for alerting me all the same. I never open IE when connecting via 'Connect to', I wait until balloon tells me I'm connected. I may wish to check out OE beforehand.
Greysts - have checked Properties of both icons and they are identical in each category, should that be the norm?
For the record, I have now connected via BTYahoo (or BTOWAnytime) icon since taking a break after posting my problem. This time all was well, the logon page came straight in.

George, have you tried downloading their latest Internet Connection Manager? Go to "My Account" (when you can get on to Yahoo, that is) and have a look at this page , then go to the downloads section on that page and click on "Dial-up software". This later version might help. When you click on the BT Yahoo! Anytime icon, after the connection is made, don't you get the option to choose which Browser you want to use? I do. When you click on that icon, you can click on "configure" or something like that at the top of the dial-up box so that you get the options I described. I can't check it now, as being on-line, I can't get the dial-up box. Hope this makes sense. Madeline.

If the command line is identical they should both end up in the same place which they clearly don't. Could you paste the two lines here so we can have a look?

Excuse my ignorance greysts, command line? point me in the direction would you please? I checked each category of the dialup icons Properties which one am I after.
Madeline, thanks, I'll follow up your suggestion if all else fails. Haven't had time to phone BT 151 yet about line sharing.

I've downloaded the new Bt Yahoo connection thingy Madeline. Reconnecting with this I was given the choice as you mentioned, never given that before, so reckon I had not configured things right before. The connection worked a treat, earlier when first connecting to view these replies BTYahoo logon page via BTOW Anytime icon took an age to download.
I'll give this a few more tests of efficiency, I dial up half a dozen times a day so that might prove whether this was the answer. If not then it's 151 and be on my best behaviour.
Many thanks.

Sorry George I lapsed into jargon. If you right click on the shortcut and choose properties under the Shortcut tab you will see a line called Target. In that box is the command that is used to run the programme.
As an example this "C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\SpybotSD.exe" /advancedmode is the command line that I have in the Spybot shortcut. As you can see it just points to the location of the programme. The bit at the end (/advancedmode) is what's known as a switch. In this case it means I want run Spybot but go into Advanced Mode straight away.
The commands in your two shortcuts will have something different about them although having read your last post it looks as if you are sorted.

Unless I'm not following your advice correctly in each of the icon properties there is no line named 'Target'. Prior to following Madeline's suggestion contents of both properties were identical for General/Options/Security/Networking/Advanced.
Rechecking the new icon properties for BTYahoo connection the difference is this one only has General and Advanced. In General: "Properties for this connection have been optimised for you. There are no user definable settings that can be be made for this connection other than choice of modem." Advanced is the XP Firewall.
This is the fourth connection I've made today since downloading the new one and the improvement is 100%. I'm straight on to BTYahoo home page, what is new to me is the prefix of 1470 to the 0808 dial up number plus a choice of browser and OE.
I hope it's sorted without further ado, a couple of days of use will determine this.

This is more for my satisfatcion now rather than trying to fix anything because it sounds as if it's all working OK anyway. Firstly are the icons on the desktop or somewhere else? If on the Desktop do they have a little arrow in the bottom left hand corner to indicate that they are shortcuts? If not then they are not shortcuts but programme icons which explains why you couldn't follow my instructions.

One was desktop shortcut BTOW Anytime, now deleted to make way for BTYahoo Anytime. Another shortcut - 'Network Connections' opens to reveal the two BTOW icons. Checked properties on all of them.
The other, Start/All programs/Connect to/BTOW.(2 connections.) Hope this is making sense.
You are right, all seems well, I've never had it so good! Nevertheless, if you don't mind, keep prodding me to see if I can follow what you had in mind. I'd appreciate the learning.

Let's hope all stays well, George. What I suggested was a shot-in-the-dark really, but it was obviously worth a try! Madeline.

Better than a shot in the dark Madeline. More like good advice for anyone like me who should really check out what's on offer by the ISP. A lesson learned.

I've just re-read your very first post in this thread and I should have read it properly first time. You didn't actually have 2 icons did you? You had one icon and then the 'Start, Programs' route. So basically all my waffle about two icons was exactly that - waffle.
I think the best thing to do is start listening to younger people like Madeline and ignore oldies like me,

Oooh, George, you're making me . Don't tell greysts, but I'm not one of the younger ones; I'm a "silver surfer" with 3 grandchildren! Nice that he thought I was "younger", though. Madeline.
