Hi, I've attempted twice(thru O/E & hotmail) to send an e mail but keep receiving an error msg. As I'am sending/receiving other mail with no problem I can't fathom it out(nothing unusual there!) Details are. From Mail Delivery Subsystem<MAILER-DAEMON@public.mod.uk>The following addresses had permanent fatal errors---<help@veteransagency.mod.uk>554 5.4.6 Too many hops 26(25 max). Too many hops?- what's this, beer making! Any advice appreciated.
The message 'Too many hops' indicates that there are too many hubs or servers between you and the intended server. Every time your email is bounced from one server to the next it counts as a hop. However, the IP address (554.5.4.6) you gave can't be right. Could you check it again and let us know what it is.
Hi Tigger 2. Thanks for info. I've just managed to send e mail now that most reliable e mail service, ntlworld, is now back on line! I've received no error msg so I assume it got through. Many thanks for your help.
Hi greysts. I've just checked the details again and confirm the detail received was: 554 5.4.6 Too many hops 26(25 max).from<my e mail address>via localhost, to <mod address>. What do you think?
If that is the IP address given then I don't know the answer unless the message really means that it has timed out trying to get to a non-existent address. Sounds as if the NTL server blew a gasket and started producing spurious error messages.
Although the e mail svc came back on after several hours off-line I did notice it was playing up i.e. I sent an e mail to myself but didn't get it for some time. Also I have yet to be notified(via MSGTAG) that the msg to MOD has still not been opened nearly 24hrs later. I rec'd no error msg so assumed it got thru.
If you are using MSGTAG on an email to the Ministry of Defence I would be very surprised indeed if you get a response. I would think it almost certain that the MOD servers are heavily protected against any programme that attempts to transmit itself without the users knowledge. I know I've got the MSGTAG IP blocked and no doubt the MOD has as well. In fact they've probably got it blocked before the email is delivered. Try again but this time without MSGTAG.
