Hi, I've been around these forums for a while now. I was experimenting with web creation for the first time when came across this forum looking for solutions. My site is just another personal web site but I am very pleased with it so far and its getting better all the time. I do have an unusual hobby which you might find interesting!! Take a look to find out !!
I've learned a few things here and there and quite a bit from these forums. Before it gets any larger and more complex I wondered if you could tell me if its OK or not and if not what I could do to improve it. I'm a little worried it's too slow to load. What do you think ? Any advice, am I doing OK ?

Well I thought it was an excellent site. It's personal but you told us that at the start. That's some damn fine garden you've got there Mark. Good luck with your job hunt. Standard question to anybody from Bolton - do you know Fred?
Now for the minor complaint. I'm viewing at 1024X768 and the width of your page appears to be about 1050 because it run's off the edge of the page and I have to use the scroll bar at the bottom. I'm not a designer so have no idea how you fix it.

A superb personal site you've made there Mark. Well done.
You've got a beautiful garden and I'm happy to see you like the same plants as myself, great minds and all that? Your greenhouse is a little more lively than mine this year though.
I've got the same gripe as Greysts though. You've got your table width set at 147% and this is why we are having to scroll, which is annoying and I've only got 800pixel wide resolution. I would suggest you try and fit it all in a table of 100% wide so that it fits everybody's screen perfectly.
I've bookmarked your site so I can watch it develop.

It's a beautiful site. And definitely not too slow to load. I have 4 networked pcs on dial up so I would know.
As the others have said I was surprised when I had to side scroll. I have rarely had to do that ever.
Apart from that the site is one of the best I have ever been on.
I love puta as much as I love this forum

Thank you very much for your kind words. I was very surprised by your enthusiastic response. Positive encouragement is a great motivator.
The page size problem is due to the way the site developed but I think I understand how to fix it now. I don't have to scroll side ways on my PC so I was unaware how bad it was. It's been a right pain in Frontpage to implement the layout as I didn't start it from scratch but kind of inherited it and I now find it difficult to change the alignments etc, there are tables within tables and differing cell alignments and there not easy to change for some reason. Now I've learnt a bit, I've given up trying to modify the inherited layout and opt for a cut and paste job into a new table instead. Hopefully it will be sorted in the next few days.
Thanks again,
It's pussycats den really

I love your site! Your garden is FABULOUS and I'm oozing with envy. The pics are great but it would be nice to click on them to get a bigger picture (to see more detail). Also, I don't know if it was just me, but when viewing the pics I had a big blue square in the top left hand corner that got bigger as I scrolled down the page - not sure what that is but it was a bit annoying as it covered the links list.
Please keep it up, especially the plant stuff - I've already got a few ideas of what to plant in my garden. I'll certainly keep popping back.

I've just been delving further into your site and found your CV. You're far too clever by half. Is there some sort of dictionary I can use to explain 'submicron trench and moat etch technologies' or would it be best if I just nodded wisely and moved swiftly on?

Hi,
I think I've fixed the side scroll bar problem plus a few new bits added. The pages should all now be about 700 pixels unless I've goofed.
I haven't met Fred nor seen his steam engine but I have been to a gig by One Eye Open at Phoenix nights !!! You'll know the link if you have seen the page.
Trenches and moats, if you really want to know are very small features etched in silicon that isolate electrically active areas on a silicon chip. The smallest ones are about one quarter of a millionth of a meter and too small to be seen without a scanning electron microscope or AFM. You did ask !!!
Thie pictures are not of a high quality to start with so I'm not sure if there would be much benefit in linking to a larger file. They were all taken on my DV camcorder.
I'm not sure what the big expanding blue square is all about. What page did it happen on.? Has anyone else seen it ?
Thanks again for your kind words and encouragement.

Apart from echoing what has already been said, the only thing I'd add is to have links to external sites open in a new browser window - so the user doesn't lose contact with your site if they go off browsing the new one. As ever, this is a matter of personal preference.

A great site!
Pedant that I am, I found two cases of "your" which should be "you're". Please correct.

Steve,
I found three 'your' mistakes. Fixed them.
I agree with TFC about opening a new page when visiting external links. The fixes will be uploaded tonight.
Thanks for the tips. This is exactly why I took a brave pill and posted here.

Me again! On the garden page, the "it's" in the header should be "its". Sorry.

Steve,
Thanks for the 'it', fixed it. Keep them coming. It's a pity you can't put a red pen line through the poor spelling and grammer. Must try harder, 5/10. Are you a teacher ?
The blog has just been accepted at blogorama. Have any of the bloggers among you got any tips on organising it eg. format, layout, archiving and that sort of thing. The content for the blog I hope will develop as I settle into it. At the momnent it's sort of a personal, but public, diary so family and friends can keep up to date with things. What has been your experience with writing Blogs. fun, problems, abuse, tedious??
The brave pill: I have seen some of the roastings that are dished out to those that are trying to pull a fast one. Your not daft and you can be scary when you want to. I wasn't trying anything devious and so I wasn't too concerned but being a beginner amongst experts in an unfamilar enviroment, the forum, I didn't quite know what to expect.
It has all been constructive help and encouragement and I'm pleased I took the pill. Thanks.

M4rk, i'd like to hear some music from One Eye Open but the links to samples don't work? Otherwise, a fine site.

No, I'm not a teacher, I just have this nerdy ability to spot grammatical and spelling mistakes. Maybe I need to get a life. I'll send you a PM because I have found a few other things.

Nirvana,
The link to One Eye Open is just to their website. I don't have any music samples but I would like to link to some. I'll be talking to one of the band members, Chris, tomorrow and I'll pass our request.
Steve, thanks for all your hard work. All two pages of corrections you sent have been implemented. It was much appreciated. I'll be uploading them today along with some new content, maybe even my first web video clip if I get the time.

I've just added some video clips to this page: Water feature. This is the first time I've tried this. Could someone please tell me if they play OK, particulary the broadband clip. I'm on dial up. The vid is about 40sec long and shows a water feature illuminated at night. Any tips would also be appreciated re. file sizes, quality, methods of playing video in web pages etc
Thanks,
m4rk

Both clips worked fine here.
I see what you mean by "The light is angled so that the tops of the pipes dance with light like flickering flames"
Thats what I thought very good
Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way. Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town Waiting for someone or something to show you the way.
