Have spent the last couple of days totally re-designing my site. Have gone right back to basics, cutting out all the fancy backgrounds, headings, gifs, and animations. Apart from cutting loading time down quite a lot, I think it is easier to read. What do you think? http://www.barryoneoff.co.uk

Well, thanks all for the encouragement. I was expecting to have a few criticisms about the stark look compared to the old one. Thanks for taking the time, Whiz...

I think it looks great! And when it comes to website presentation, less is definitely more I reckon. Personal opinion I know, but I can't be doing with 'busy' looking pages - they put me right off viewing them. Yours looks like it has just the right balance, and it looks very professional too - well done!

I have to agree with Poppy, Less is more!! And while you have reduced the colours you have made it instantly even more readable.

Apart from the above, it loads much faster on a dial up connection without the frills. That was my main reason for stripping it down, but it seems that most people prefer the simple layout. Thanks to both of you, Whiz...

Whiz, stark means simple. Simple is best. The days of playground fancy stuff ended when the novelty wore off twenty years ago. Check the commercial sites, they mean serious business so keep things small and simple. Users want to get loaded, get read and get out. I wish all sites were made that way.

Yes, I have started to think that way lately. I think I was just showing off with all the buttons and bells. From the response I have received from this forum and other sources, it seems that people really do prefer plain and simple. Thanks safeTsurfer, Whiz...
