AVG Email scanner
      #73133 - Sun May 30 2004 03:49 AM

Hiya everyone,

I've just installed AVG email scanner. I already have AVG anti virus. I'm now using Microsoft Outlook but in the wizard it says that the Main Identity is Outlook Express. It gives me three options to choose from and they are all the Main Identity. Also at the beginning of the wizard it says which one do you want to choose from; Outlook Express 4,5 or 6. How do I get the AVG email scanner to also scan Microsoft Outlook, or is this not possible?

The reason why I changed from using Outlook Express to Outlook is coz it appears that AVG scans my outgoing emails, as it certifies it, but it's not certifying my incoming emails in Outlook Express, even though in the email scanner, I have ticked the option for use Outlook Express 5 Plug in. So don't know why it's not scanning the incoming emails. Any ideas?

Hope you've all had a good day and talk to you all soon.
Love,
Becky

I've just had a look at my settings and their set to scan all incoming and outgoing e-mail in Outlook. Have you made Outlook your default e-mail client Becky?

Hi Joe,

Thanks for your message. How are you doing?
Yes, the settings for incoming and outgoing scans are checked. Microsoft Outlook is being scanned and certified no problem for both incoming and outgoing emails, but with Outlook Express, only the outgoing emails are certified. That's why I swapped over from using Outlook Express to Outlook as I wanted to make sure that my emails were being scanned for viruses.

Hope you have a good day.
Talk to you soon.
Love,
Becky

Hi Becky,

You've drawn attention to a good point. I generally use Outlook for my e-mails and they are scanned by AVG both ways. This is also my default Browser, however on checking Outlook Express which I only use occasionally there is no virus scan at all as far as I can see. I also notice there is a newer version available than mine now so I will have to look in to this when I get a free moment. I'll come back to you if and when I get the answers if you haven't done so yourself or perhaps another kind person will provide us both with a solution.

I've had a little scout around the AVG Site and came up with this in their FAQ: -

FAQ - Frequently asked questions and answers
MAIN SECTION >> AVG FREE Edition FAQ
What e-mail clients are supported by AVG Free?
AVG Free Edition currently supports Microsoft Outlook email client.

Can't say whether this has any bearing on the problem in hand or not.

Sounds to me that the AVG Email Scanner hasn't been set up for Outlook Express.

I haven't got Outlook and only use OE, so can assure you that it is supported.

I suggest running the wizard again. AVG Control Centre | Mail Proxy tab | Configure

Run the wizard and see if it recognises the email accounts that are in OE.

Can't really think of anything else.

Hi Jonny,

I already done that but it appears to only recognise one e-mail account and one client. Not had time to check further but I think mine needs updating.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for your messages. I've downloaded AVG email scanner and have just used the configure wizard to scan my emails on the server for all my email addresses. The only one that it couldn't import was my freeserve one for some reason.

I'm also on default Outlook, but have a friend who uses Outlook Express and I told him about AVG anti virus, but before I give him the web site, I wanted to make sure that AVG supported and scanned Outlook Express.

Look forward to your replies and please let me know how you get on Joe.
Love,
Becky

I've had AVG and the e-mail scanner for some time, and it only certifies outgoing mail, but scans incoming as well. You'll only see it when something suspect arrives, and even then things can slip through. It's probably time I checked for the latest version. It's the beta one I've got.

Btw, I use OE6 in case that helps.

I'm using AVG and it scans and certifies both outgoing and incoming mail. I took the easy way and used this to do all the hard work of setting up.

I've downloaded and installed the latest version. Unfortunately it has cocked up Outlook Express completely on me. Seems to have changed the ports and I now can't access my mail accounts at all using this client. Fortunately Outlook is my default client and that still works well. Oh well something else for me to sort when I get time. If anyone has any ideas what's wrong I would be grateful.

It should change the ports in Outlook Express to local, 127.0.0.1

This then forces the accounts through the scanner which sets it's ports as default (on first account) to 5000 and 5001. Obviously more accounts will have different ports assigned to them.

I've got Outlook Express denied internet access in my firewall, which gives another layer of protection, although any messages in HTML that require info from a server to display correctly won't show. It doesn't need access because the scanner does have access.
