Font Differences
      #71016 - Mon May 24 2004 11:41 AM

Good morrow.

I published some actual content (instead of messing around with nice colours) on my site last night for the first time with some pride. This morning I was all set to show off at work, but when I went in it looked nothing like what I saw last night at home. The font styles were all different. I fixed it at work, published again, but it still looked the same. I went on a friends PC downstairs and the site looks fine. What's up? Am nervoius because I have a couple of affiliiates looking at the site today.

Thanks in advance.

Spookle

What fonts were you trying to use? It sounds to me like you were not using standard fonts, that come with all pc's. I'm not sure what they all are, but I know verdana and arial are two of the standard ones.
When a web page interprets the font tag, it looks for that font on the computer it is being displayed on. If it cant find it, it uses the default font. I'm not sure what that one is to be honest.

Thanks very much, have changed all pages to arial for the moment. It would be no harm if someone could post a list of standard ones, as arial is OK but it looks a bit plain.

Ahem, it would also have hepled if I refreshed the webpage.......

Thanks again

I found this link http://www2.gol.com/users/billp/articlehtml/fonts.html
Take a close look at the font names in the HTML code. Several fonts to choose from.

Hi Spookleman,

Not knowing what your site is about this may not apply, but... For any areas with more than one or two line of text a sans serif font is preferable, i.e. Arial, Verdana, Helvetica. As you say, they look plain but by being plain make it easier on the eye for the visitor.

Serif fonts, such as Times/Times Roman can be used for headlines, image credits, or where the text content is only 1-3 lines.

A good guide is your daily newspaper, the press take great care in ensuring the paragraphs are easily readable (and not a strain).

Bottom line, your site, your choice.

PS
If you get into CSS you'll find it affords you greater control over how text appears.

Thanks vey much guys. I am using comic sans serif at the moment. Have a look at the site below and see what you think. Don't laugh at content as still under construction.

Thanks again.

Trouble is, spookleman, not everyone has comic sans serif on their machine......
