Hi all, I have been making a small site, mainly for family and friends to view http://www.angelfire.com/rock3/sandgirl/index.html . I have added some midi tunes to each page and everyone can hear them apart from my sister, although she gets the sound OK on other sites. We both have Windows Xp and I.E. 6. Does anyone have any idea why she cannot get sound from my site please? She has the box checked Tools, Advanced, Play sounds in Web Pages.

I can't hear the music either. I'm running Windows XP and using Mozilla Firefox for your information

oh dear..well thanks for listening and replying. It's strange, maybe there is something missing in my link. This is the code I'm using
{embed src="http://www.userclub.de/ucolaf/midi/pop/EltonJohn_CandleInTheWind.mid" hidden="true" autostart="true" loop="false" align="center"><noembed> <bgsound src="http://www.userclub.de/ucolaf/midi/pop/EltonJohn_CandleInTheWind.mid" loop="1"}
(replacing { } with< > )

Delete your existing code and use this code instead. It can go anywhere in the body tag. Wherever you choose to put it, this will appear:

Which will automatically play the song and repeat it 20 times and will stop when you move to another page unless you put the same code into another page. It can only play in Internet Explorer, but for people who don't have Internet Explorer, it displays the text "Click here for sound". This is somewhat a better method than the other because the user can change the volume and pause or stop the song.
<object id="Player1" width="250" height="65" classid="clsid:6BF52A52-394A-11d3-B153-00C04F79FAA6"> <param name="URL" value="http://www.userclub.de/ucolaf/midi/pop/EltonJohn_CandleInTheWind.mid"> <param name="autoStart" value="true"> <param name="playCount" value="20"> [Click <a href="http://www.userclub.de/ucolaf/midi/pop/EltonJohn_CandleInTheWind.mid">here</a> for sound] </object>

Hi Ellen, just visited your site, very impressive. The sound did play for me, but it took at least about 20 seconds before it started ?? Also your hit counter didn't show, just the dreaded red cross in a box. other than that was impressed cheers M

Hi M,
Thanks for your kind words I think it may take a while for you to hear it as it's the last thing to load on the page. It seems quicker for me, only about 5 seconds, but maybe because I have broadband. The counter also shows for me..on 000473 already, only been going a month so I'm quite happy with that. It's strange how things work for some and not others...sighs.
Anyhow thanks again for taking a look Ellen

I have to agree, it is a very heavy page (over 400Kb, all told) 20 seconds plus for me on BB (poor dial-up visitors), which could be a reflection on the sites server.
TFC Nothing is a problem for me...

I am hoping the music loads faster now. I have moved the script for the midi player up the page a little, and put the script for the cursor at the end instead of the begining, as that is VERY long. This is my first attempt at html web building and I am still learning by my mistakes. Always glad of any constructive criticism and advice. Thanks to all at Web-User who are always ready and willing to help.

Hi M,
Oh great ! Glad there is an improvement for anyone who peeks in, particularly dial-up peekers. . I know you are on BB but my sister isn't and she hasn't mentioned it taking too long. Just going out into the garden to take some more pics to add to the gardening page sometime.
Thanks again for looking.
Ellen

I've copied Owen's code into a few of my web pages and it works great but,,,,, some of the sounds are just short lasting effects and the player isn't really needed. Is there a way to hide the player ? Or would I be better using Ellen's original code ?
See the The wild patch page to see what I mean.
Owen, or someone. The page I really wanted to link to is 'The garden and wild animals' at markandlinda but the address looks like this: http://www.markandlinda.co.uk/FloraFaunapercentsign20.html and a link from here doesn't work eg The garden and wild animals
percentsign20 seems to do something special as it doesn't display the percent symbol here ?? I am a novice if this has an obvious answer !!!
I didn't put the percentsign20 in the address ? Does anyone know why this happened and why I can't link direct to the page. ? It does work on the site though.
Thanks,
m4rk

You need to use the html for special characters for the percent sign %20, This wouldn't be necessary if there was no space in the file name
Please post your query to the boards, so that others can learn Remember there is no such thing as a simple question, just a question you don't know the answer to, though they are the easiest to answer

Thanks Puta,
I didn't intend to use special characters. I didn't know about them until 1hr ago. There's a mistake in the html file name. It had a space in it before the dot. When I uploaded the files the special character was automatically inserted in the name instead of the space. I've fixed it now and will be uploading the correct name tonight. I would have edited my previous post to get the correct link but there's time window on this forum for edits and I've gone past it.

Hi bertox
There are many ways to add music to your site. The simplest is this way. Add this script and replace 'YOUR MIDI URL GOES HERE' with the music url of your choice.
<embed src="YOUR MIDI URL GOES HERE" hidden="true" autostart="true" loop="false" align="center"><noembed> <bgsound src="YOUR MIDI URL GOES HERE" loop="1">
If you prefer to allow your viewer to switch the music on or off themself you will need this script, again replacing my words with your midi url
<BR><object id="Player1" width="250" height="65" classid="clsid:6BF52A52-394A-11d3-B153-00C04F79FAA6"> <param name="URL" value="YOUR MIDI URL GOES HERE"> <param name="autoStart" value="true"> <param name="playCount" value="20"> [Click <a href="YOUR MIDI URL GOES HERE">here</a> for sound] </object>
Both of these scripts take midi tunes. I don't know what music you intend to use but here is a useful midi-site http://www.geocities.com/TelevisionCity/5729/movie.html or if you Google the song you will usually find what you need.
another site you may find useful, explains how to add music http://fair.dzones.net/musicweb/introduction.htm
Good luck...
Ellen

Firefox doesn't support the <bgsound> tag unless an extension has been installed.
