System details - Win 98, Internet Explorer 6, Wanadoo Broadband using Copper Jet Modem (Came with the Freeserve package I signed up for last year).
I have over the last two days had a bit of trouble with my broadband connection as I have been using the net for about an hour and suddenly it disconnects and the broadband icon on the taskbar goes red so when I try to re-connect I get the message "Connection failed could not detect modem".
The strange thing is I look at the moden itself And there are two light on it that are both green which tells me that (supposedly) everything is alright.
I also went into the Control Panel and looked in the Device Manager in the System bit but there was no sign of the Copper Jet under any of the icons.
I restarted the PC and everything was back to normal.
The only thing that is different for yesterday and today is that at the weekend I purchased a gamepad which I have put into the other USB port, I know this might be a stupid question could this be affecting the modem? I have remove the gamepad and was using the net for about 15 mins and there was no problem although I had been on for over an hour when I had this problem.
I have tried contacting Wanadoo but could not get through before I came to work, if someone could suggest anything else I might be able to do I would be grateful.
Thanks in advance

It's not a stupid question about the other USB port - other USB devices can quite often cause problems. Are you using a USB hub or are both devices plugged direct into the PC?

Hi Greysts,
Both items are plugged directly into the PC, Also when I looked to see if the Device Manager showed the modem I looked to see if I could get any info on the USB ports but couldn't find a name for the components so that I could include it on the system info of my original post, The make of my PC is MS Net if that is any help.

It might be worth re-installing the modem software and see if that put's the device back into Device Manager.

when fitting a web cam to my brothers computer, i had the problem of it stuffing up the modem. I got around it by moving the camera to a usb port on the front of the computer.

Thanks Greysts & Bricat,
Unfortuantely my PC only has two USB ports which are next to each other on the back.
But I also must apologise as I have seemed to have resolved my problem but remove the gamepad as I used the net for over two hours last night and nearly the same amount of time this morning and (crossed fingers) had no problems.
I only brought the gamepad as I have just re-discovered the joy (to me anyway) of playing Commodore 64 & Spectrum games again using various emulators, but now I will look for a gamepad that connects to a serial port instead.
Thanks again for your help.
