Internet Connection Blues
      #68743 - Mon May 17 2004 02:37 PM

I apologise if this was posted in the wrong board.

I am having trouble connecting to the internet.

I have tried installing Tiscali, BT Openworld and another ISP that escapes me right now. When they get to the stage when they need to connect to the internet to complete my account set up it can not access the internet.

The modem makes the right noises and then the little icon with the two computers pops up in the task bar but it just ends up showing a 404 error.

The little icon in the corner only flashes a couple of times then it falls silent. the bytes receieved figure is at least twice as high as the bytes sent figure.

I left it connected for two minutes and the bytes sent figure was about 700 whilst the bytes received figure was nearing 3,000.

If that is not weird enough, I have used AOL and with them I can use their portal browser to go to their chat rooms, message board and send & receive emails. But I can not go anywhere else.

If I attempt to use a messenging sercive program like MSN it acts like I am not connected to the internet. Same with Outlook Express and even when I attempt to ping web site.

The modem is a brand new Intel modem V92 and I am running Windows ME with a 40GB hard drive and over 250mb of ram.

I have not got any thing running in ther background apart from windows.

I even changed the modem to a basic HAM V92 modem and it made absolutely no difference what-so-ever.

I am absolutely stumped on this one. Does anyone have the slightest idea why I can not go online?

I would appreciate the help.

Hmmm I wonder if TCP/IP has been corrupted as so often does when AOHell has been installed

Click Start | Programs | Accessories and click MS-DOS Prompt.
In the MS-DOS Prompt window, type ping 127.0.0.1 at the prompt, and press ENTER.

If you see a Request timed out or Transmit failed error message, do the following:

Right-click My Network Places on the desktop, and click Properties
On the Configuration tab in the Network box, click one of the network components that is labeled TCP/IP, and click Remove.

Repeat the above step, clicking all other TCP/IP-related network components and clicking Remove until all are removed.

Click OK, and click Yes when you are asked whether you want to restart the computer.

Click Start | Settings | Control Panel | Network. (you might need to click View All Control Panel Options to see the Network option.)

On the Configuration tab in the Network box, click Add.
In the Select Network Component Type box, click Protocol and click Add.

In the Select Network Protocol box, click Microsoft in the Manufacturers list,
click TCP/IP in the Network Protocols list, and click OK.
Click OK to close the Network box.
If you are asked whether you want to keep the newer version of each file, click No.

Click Yes when you are asked whether you want to restart the computer.

Click Start | Programs | Accessories and click MS-DOS Prompt.
In the MS-DOS Prompt window, type ping 127.0.0.1 at the prompt, and press ENTER

what is the result now?

Thank you :)

I will copy that into a document file and try it out when I get home.

I have another hard drive which is tiny (about 2gb) and that had Windows 98 and had no problem going online. So I managed to deduce with my huge brain that it must be something on the 40gb hard drive (give this man a nobel peace prize!)

Thanks again for the advise, I really appreciate it. :)

The proceedure worked, to a point.

I did exactly what you said and I then connected to the internet and it worked. I went into forums I had not been into for ages but then after 6 minutes it all went dead.

I disconnected and reconnected again but found it was acting like it was before I did that proceedure with the tcp/ip thing. I did the proceedure again and then connected to the internet and found it worked for another 6 minutes then it went dead.

Now if I want to connect to the internet for six minutes I have to go through that proceedure every single time.

Is there somethign I can do to stay online for longer?

Is AOL still on this drive?

Try reinstalling the WINSOCK, by downloading and running LSPfix
Close all Windows and run the program
When started, Click the "I know what I am doing" box and click finished

Now try to hit the net

I opened the program and saw two columns, one called keep and the other called remove. there was nothing in the remove column but there was four DLL files in the keep column:

RNR20.DLL
MSWSOSP.DLL
MSAFD.DLL
RSVPSP.DLL

I ticked the "I know what i'm doing" box and clicked finish. It gave me a list of repairs that were carried out - none.

When I uninstalled AOL I did it via the add/remove program in the control panel but upon doing a search of the computer (start -> search) I found several folders that had not been removed - I removed them.

I managed to download the update drivers for my modem but these have made no difference.

When the connection died I clicked the computer icon in the taskbar and got this:

9 minutes
Connected at 40,000bps
Bytes Received 1,632,456
Bytes Sent 276,631

Does that mean anything at all? I did notice that the "connected at" figure ranges from 38,000 right up to 57,600 each time I connect.

I have been using the 5-9 miutes I get each time to download the one minute and two minute updates from microsoft.com. Somehow I thought maybe one of these would sort the problem (don't ask me why).

Thank you for the help again.

I may have to take the computer to the repair shop and see if they can mend it. The problem is the only computer repair place around here is in the branch of PC World and they act so smug and snobbish when someone brings in their computer for repair.

I was listening to a computer help show on LBC radio 97.3 and someone emailed the show with a problem concerning Windows ME freezing.

The guy, Eric Wiltshire said that Windows ME was a horrible operating system and that the person should ditch it and upgrade to Windows XP or even downgrade to the OS below it because he said Windows ME was rubbish.

This got me thinking.

if I upgrade to Windows XP will my connection troubles go or is it the hard drive and not the OS?

It certainly will solve the problem, as would a format of your hard drive, both of which are drastic solutions

On Saturday I will purchase a copy of Windows XP, hopefully this should sort the problem out, if not then a reformat will be me only remaining option.

Thank you for the help, it is nice to see there are people willing to help out novices like myself. :)
