Best Dial up ISP ?
      #68558 - Sun May 16 2004 07:38 PM

I have had enough of Freeserve/wanadoo dial up. Is there an ISP that doesn't have a 2 hr cut off time? Also preferably one that doesn't want you to enter into a minimum 12 month contract. I have read reviews of ISPs but would prefer to hear from people that can personally recommend a company.

Hi Jaynee
I too got fed up with the two-hour cut off on Freeserve, and indeed most isp's actually. I don't know what package you are on with them, but I swopped to OneTel last October, on their gaming package, it's £14.99 a month, and has a 6 hour cut off. I have never, ever had any problem at all getting online either day or night, they have been brilliant. I recommend them. Their address is http://www.onetel.co.uk/index.php/internet. You can pay monthly, by d/d, no contract.

I'm still a great fan of PlusNet. Possibly the best customer service that I've ever received from any company.

Now, about that quid........

as far as i know you can get TIME to install a different modem just say to the sales assistant can you install a modem that is not specifically for their server and get him/her to say yes (as soon as they say they can do it you are in control) .

Thanks widthing666, my TIME pc is over 5 years old now, and mainly used for the Grandchildren to potter around on when they come to stay with me. Must say though in fairness to TIME if using supanet ISP, I get Norton anti-virus free and have done so for well over 5 years, no charge.. I use my laptop most of time now, I have supanet plus (highstream) installed so I am getting some use out of TIME lols... Thanks again for your comment.

Hi Jaynee, I still recommend V21 as dial up ISP. £9.99 per month for 42 hours per WEEK. I know this is not enough for some folk but we've never managed to use all 42 hours in one week. If you do I think they charge you by the minute at usual rates (I don't know what they are off hand but I think they're not too exhorbitant) but they will email you in plenty of time before that happens. Usually when you've reached 80% of your weeks usage. This week there have been one or two problems getting on the 'net but this is the first time that's happened in the two years we've been with them. They might be ready to increase prices as they've been at this price for two years now so don't blame me if you join and they suddenly go up! On the odd occasion I've needed to email them they've replied usually on the same day but certainly by the following one. If you need any more info just shout. Regards, Steve.

I would back Flicker regarding OneTel. I have been with them for the last 3 years and for the first two they didn't cut you off after two hours. They do now if you are on the lower package - depends on your choice. Other than that they have been very good, no expensive calls if you have a question, good customer service and they even provide an excellent phone service that you can have regardless of who your line or ISP is. (Check out Tell Your Friends service @ £2.99 pm allowing you to call 10 landline numbers at 1p per minute anytime)

No, I don't work for Onetel or get any commission, I just think they are excellent.

I use BT Yahoo! I'm sure that lots of people will say it's not the best and they might well be right. It does cut you off, but after 4 hours, not 2 except during what they consider to be peak time (7pm to 10pm I think) then it's 2½ hours.

Our telephone exchange is being enabled for broadband on August the 4th. So I may as well stick with Freeserve/Wannadoo until then. Then I will be going with Freedom2surf.

Hi Moondust re highstream I am very pleased with this ISP, £10:00 per "calendar" month. I am still on dial up, but get a real high speed with them! They also do ADSL CONNECTION. Send me a private message I will send you link etc; if you wish. Isa.
