I admit I am a thicko when it comes to this, but perhaps some kind person can explain to me why I might want/need one of these? It's the difference between two hosting packages, one has it, the other doesn't. So can someone give me some examples of what one might be used for?
many thanks

I'm not particularly up on it, but PHP is useful for a lot of things, such as content management systems, forums, chat and much more.

I think that you should get one that definetly has them. A good hoster is http://webcentre.lycos.co.uk. I use it for my website http://www.mohiga.com. They support everything for £2.49/month.
I you ever learn (or use/need) MySQL, or PHP databasing systems it is really usefull. In fact, you can do tons of stuff with PHP that you could never dream of in HTML or Javascript such as making firewalls etc.
hope this helps

MySQL is a free, open source SQL database server and PHP is a server-side scripting language.
PHP is the language most commonly used to query a MySQL database, but it can also allow you to do things such as create web forms and make secure member-only areas.
They're often used for things like bulletin boards/forums, shopping carts and blogging software.

I would agree with everyone else here. PHP/MySQL are great to have, even if you dont use them straight away, you might like to add a forum or blog to your site, and rather than getting a branded banner and popup ridden freebie, you can get the script (usually php) and add it to your site and it looks so much better :)

Thanks for all your help, it has made things a bit clearer. I've just had another look at the two hosting packages and they both include PHP support, but only one has the mysql.
I've tried having forums before - a remotely hosted one without ads - it was good, although a bit slow, just a shame the people weren't so good. Therefore, I am unlikely to want forums again, so do I really need the MySql? Could I manage with just the PHP if I were to want something later?
Thanks again

The Mysql is a database and is pretty much essential for forums to store the data in. Its possible to use a text file to store data in though and you might find a forum script that does this, but most use databases
