I have been having trouble with my modem, so I thought I would uninstall it and then reinstall it. I uninstalled it but then found out I had lost the instalation disk.
Is there anything I can do or will I need to buy a new modem? If I do need a new modem can anyone reccomend a decent one (dial-up)
Here's hoping you can help

Dial up modems can be picked up for about £10 from your local PC store (NOT PC world!!)
If you know what model modem it is, you might try downloading the driver from the manufacturers website using the PC you are now, and transferring to floppy or CD

If you run a free copy of Belarc Advisor available from here http://www.belarc.com/End-User_Products.html it will tell you what your internal modem is. You can then go and download the correct drivers from the net.

Try this. Unplug your modem at the PC and delete the device in Device Manager. Switch your PC off and remove it's power supply. Reconnect your modem then switch the PC back on. If you are using Win98 or greater the PC should recognise a new device and try to install it. If your modem is fairly common your Windows installation disk may have the drivers on board. If not it is a fair bet that the original drivers are somewhere on your PC. When the install routine asks for a particular file use the search option to find the file. It will probably be in C:\Windows or C:\Windows\System32.

Hi, It's me again
First of all can I say Thank You to those that have posted a reply. I've never used a forum like this before.
Here's where I am at the moment with my modem problem.
I have removed my modem, deleated from device manager and refitted it. On start up I received the message new hardware found.
The add hardware wizard came up, it said it had found a PCI Communication Device.I then clicked on the specify the driver location and inserted C:\Sitecom\Driver|WinME (this is the location I downloaded the driver to from Sirecom)
I clicked next, and then received the message "windows unable to locate the software for this device"
Can anyone offer any other advice?

Hello again
I've just had a look at the Sitecom site and it appears that the drivers are downloaded in a zipped state. You will need to double click on the WinME file and this will extract all the files to another directory. Without seeing the file you have downloaded I can't be sure but it is possible that there will be an Install.exe or Setup.exe included. If there is you should be able to use one or the other. If not, when Windows says it has found new hardware just point it to the directory where you have unzipped the file.

It would be at this point that you inserted the cdrom that contained the drivers for your modem, but as you pointed out you haven't got it hmm!!
Try downloading the driver from here

OK! Uninstall it, let Windows find it again, this time YOU choose which modem driver and pick 'standard' modem driver. If that doesn't work then go here and see if you can find the help you need... http://www.modemhelp.org/

Doesn't look right to me:- C:\Sitecom\Driver|WinME shouldn't that be C:\Sitecom\Driver\WinME ? If not let Windows choose a suitable standard driver from it's database.
