Cant access some sites
      #6694 - Thu Aug 21 2003 12:35 PM

I cant access some websites that I could yesterday . they just come up "website not available" as if it is offline .I cant even get through the password stage on MSN Messenger , it says the system is down . Or I can get on a site and click a link but then that page becomes unavailable . What I have noticed is that the sites I cant get on require some sort of password verication .

Hi Colin, I've suffered a similar problem a couple of times and found that I'd somehow managed to click something on ZoneAlarm that caused the problem. I got things back to normal by resetting it to it's defaults (and on one occassion by uninstalling and then re-installing it). This might not be the answer but, if you stick around I'm sure someone will come to your assistance. Regards, Steve.

Hi Colin
I am experiencing the same problems this weekend. Unable to sign in to MSN messenger and can't access my on-line HSBC Bank Account, or my Paypal bank account. Each time I try I get the message 'The Page Cannot Be Displayed'. Please help someone, I really need to get into these sites. Thanks,

Try holding down you control key as you try to access those sites you mention. If you then find you can access them, you must have a popup stopper which is preventing the sites loading fully.

Thanks for your post Byron. Afraid it didn't work for me. I wondered if I tried System Restore back a few days it would allow me access. I accessed all these sites into the middle of this week, now I can't get in.

The normal question to ask in the circumstances you describe is 'What's different on my PC between yesterday and today?' Have you installed any new software or hardware? Have you downloaded anything off the net? Have you changed anything that might have security implications such as the settings in ZoneAlarm or Norton or the IE Zone? If nothings changed have a look at your ISP's web site to see if they have been having server problems. Come back to us if anything strikes you.

Yes, I have recently downloaded AVG anti-virus scan and run it a couple of times, also downloaded RAM IDLE PRO but wasn't happy with it so I removed it. I have emailed NTLworld, my broadband ISP telling of my problems but no reply as yet. I have Zone Alarm but haven't changed any settings.

I think the time has come to get the Guru involved. We need to see what is being loaded at startup to see if there is anything that could be causing your problem. In particular it would be useful to see if Ram Idle Pro has left anything behind.
Perhaps Puta could post his instructions on running Hijack This.

Go to this site, and download 'Hijack This!'.

Unzip it, launch Hijack This, then press Scan, and press Save Log

This will generate a text file that will list all running processes, all applications that are loaded automatically when you start Windows, and more.

open that file
Go to Edit | Select all
Now click Edit | copy to copy it
Come back to web user, Right Click and paste its contents here

Some real nasties in there!!
Restart Hijack this
Put a check mark against the following:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.runsearch.com/search.html

Click Fixed Checked

Now go to this site , download and install Spybot Search & Destroy (3.5Mb Freeware)

Once Installed, Go to Start | Programs | Spybot | Spybot (Easy Mode) Open It, click Update | Search for Updates | Download Updates (if required)

Now go to Search and Destroy
Click check for problems
Wait it for it to finish scanning

When done, put a check mark against all RED and GREEN entries and click Fix Selected Problems

Repost a fresh

well guru, I have done everything you asked, ran the spybot and checked all red (there were no green) and clicked Fix Selected problems. I then rebooted, but everything is still the same. As soon as I click ' Log On' in my two on-line bank accounts I get 'Page Cannot be Displayed' Cannot Find Server or DNS error.
Also unable sign in to MSN messenger or hotmail. This is really doing my head in.
Anyway thanks for trying to help me.

Ok can you open Internet Explorer, Go To Help | About | Internet Explorer

What does it say in Cipher Strength?

Also check the time and date by double clicking the clock in your Systray

Finally, clear out all your cookies

Did you clear out your cookies?

If not, do so and also empty your Temporary Internet Files and History Folders

Also, to make sure that I am not barking up the wrong tree, could you give me the EXACT error message
