:-(
I have just installed Nero6, had my motherboard replaced, and a few other minor hiccups and problems. But the big issue now is that I can not burn disc's. I have had to go through the process of "turning on" the burning facility description in Windows XP services. I have ASPI drivers in place, and have tried both the Nero ASPI drivers and System ASPI drivers to no effect.
The result is this. In Nero when you activate the Burn dialogue, the error message comes up as "this disc drive is being used by another program", and if you try to burn straight from windows the dialogue keeps saying that there is no disc in the drive, even though you have a disc, and the drive will read it as an empty disc when not in burn mode.
Has anyone come across this , and managed a work round. I have scoured the internet, and can find nothing specifically involving this problem. The drive involved is a Samsung 308 combo drive.
I have tried to contact Nero by e.mail for advice, but am still awaiting a reply. Again their FAQ's. although extensive, doesn't cover this problem

Until more explicit help comes along, I'm sure I've read somewhere that once Nero and the like are installed, XP's version no longer functions. A bit like when 'Word' is installed 'Wordpad' disappears.

It seems to me that if you turn on the CD burning Service in XP you are, in effect, telling any other CD burning software that it needn't bother trying to use the CD drive 'cos Windows will look after it. I presume it is the IMAPI CD Burning COM service that you have switched on. That service on my PC is a Manual start and is currently stopped but I can quite happily use Nero to burn CD's. Can you try changing the startup to Manual and stopping the service? You'll have to reboot I think. Windows XP can't burn directly to CD's it needs a third party software to be present, in your case Nero. But Nero can't start because another program is already using the drive....

I had a very similar problem about a year ago. I was on 98. I tried several different drives and eventualy gave up. I was advised by someone at work that every so often a motherboard will cause this. The only way to fix it was to buy a new motherboard. Anyway about 6 months ago I rebuilt my PC and thought I would buy a new drive (I returned my previous ones and got a refund). Everything is working perfectly now.
I'n definately not saying this is your trouble, just thought it was worth mentioning my experience.

Can't remember specifics but I've read elsewhere that this is a problem with version SIX Nero and XP, they are not very compatible. They fight over dominance (heck XP fights with everything for dominance, including the owner of the machine!). I also seem to recall there is some problem with an API conflict between the two.
I do have to ask why you went for v6 instead of being content with v5.xxxx of Nero? I always say new releases should be avoided until the bugs are shaken out, and v.5 is perfectly up to the task. This isn't a race to see who can grab the new car plates first yanno! LOL

I use version six with xp and it works fine using nero express, the only weird thing is you have to select the tracks backwards i.e. 12,11,10, etc. they are then inverted by nero. God knows why, must be a bug.
