Wanadoo broadband help
      #64866 - Mon May 03 2004 09:23 PM

HELP!!!. I have received my broadband disk from Wanadoo (Freeserve as it was) and attempted many times over to install the necessary software from their disk. Included with their little package is a Speedtouch modem which on the face of it looks simple enough to use, however the cause of true love never runs smooth and this is the case right now. If any else out there can identify with this please tell me.
I run the disk, I click install broadband, the Speedtouch wizard takes over and it a ppears the PC is ready to be connected. I connect the modem to the PC via a USB port. Lights appear, both solid green, things look OK however the icon on the taskbar indicates that the modem is not plugged in!!. Now at this point, I was confused, needless to say the connection didn't work. I had noticed a little message pop up on the taskbar saying "A problem occured during hardware installation. Your new new hardware might not work properly" and this obviously related to the Speedtouch modem or so I took it.
I called Freeserve (several times) and we/they have established that when the hardware is supposedly installing that there is no driver installed (as confirmed when checking the device manager) to drive the Speedtouch modem and this is in spite of downloading and running a full driver update from the Speedtouch website, version 3.01 as advised by some woman from Alcatel who deal with the modems. Every thing I do to get this thing going comes back with "Modem not plugged in". Are we missing something? Is it to do with the PC and system I am operating? for info purposes the PC is running XP home edition and I'm using a Mesh PC. Is there a setting I should be adjusting or is it some configuration problem.
Somebody, somewhere get me out of this hell hole..................

Unplug the modem from the USB port.

Install ALL the necessary software, reboot your computer, now plug the modem back in
Please post your query to the boards as many hands make light work, and I'm not talking electricians! If your problem is solved, let us know so that others can learn.

Have you got the Modem plugged in direct to a USB port on the PC or is it in a USB hub? If in a hub try moving the connection to the PC. Before trying Puta's advice I would suggest you go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, System and click on the Hardware tab. Open Device Manager and if you can see any large yellow ! or ? against a device, delete the device. Then re-install the modem software and switch off your PC. Reboot the PC then connect your Modem. The Windows New Hardware Found wizard should start up and finish the installation.

Thanks for the replies but alas they don't work. There are no suspects identified by the device manager so nothing to remove and it doesn't matter how many times I've installed/uninstalled/closed down/rebooted, the same problem remains. When I access the device manager and check that the modem has installed and check the properties of the new modem the device manager says "No drivers are installed for this device" and that is despite using the installation disk and/or running the set-up using a downloaded zip file from the Speedtouch website.
The question is Why don't drivers install?.
Again I've been onto Freeserve and now they are suggesting that I purchase a PCI card because the chip set-up is being questioned (USB 2.0 Root hub). Does that suggestion make sense?
Anyone again, please shed some light.

DO NOT USE A USB HUB - CONNECT DIRECTLY TO YOUR PC, SWAP SOMETHING OVER IF YOU HAVE TO!

CHECKLIST

GOT YOUR FILTERS?
DISC?
MODEM?

STEPS

1. DON'T CONNECT YOUR MODEM TO THE PC FIRST OF ALL (IF YOU HAVE UNINSTALL ALL SOFTWARE AND DRIVERS, SEARCH ALL NEC. FOLDERS / FILES ETC)

DONE?

2. OK CRACK OPEN YOUR CD DRIVE

3. BANG IN YOUR FREESERVE CD
THIS WILL GUIDE YOU THROUGH IT

4. CLICK THE INSTALL BROADBAND LINK ON THE PAGE THAT'S ON SCREEN

5. OK FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS ON SCREEN TILL YOU GET TO THE FINAL PAGE
YOU SHOULD GET PROMPTED TO CONNECT YOUR MODEM

6. CONNECT YOUR MODEM
DON'T USE A USB HUB, CONNECT IT DIRECTLY TO THE PC
IF YOU NEED TO, SWAP SOMETHING OVER, WITH YOUR HUB

7. FOLLOW THE ONSCREEN PROMPT

8. CONNECT YOUR TELEPHONE LINE FILTERS, MAKE SURE YOU'VE GOT ONE ON EACH TELEPHONE SOCKET!!!!!

JOB DONE

PS Sorry for shouting, this has to work

The advice from Wanadoo seems to be saying that you don't have a USB port available on the PC and you are using a separate hub. Is that correct? To repeat ad nauseum do NOT plug your modem into a USB hub. If you need more USB ports on the PC then they are probably correct in advising you to get a PCI card.

Again, thanks for your replies.
To begin with I am not using a root hub, in fact not one of the USB ports is in use!! which adds to the frustration even more.
Before I go to added cost of more calls to Freeserve I'll take up your offer tw0badmice of another disk to try. I've sent you a personal message.
One day I WILL be broadband connected!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi this is spooky ........I have EXACTLY the same experience...except it was a bloke I spoke to at Alcatel.
They told me I needed to upgrade my chipset ...this I did ....still no connection.
After another one and a half hours on one telephone call they gave up on me and cut me off...after finding out that I had no network adapters in my device manager window.
I tried a neighbours cd and this still did not work...they installed everything in about 10 minutes with no problems.
I tried installing wanadoo broadband on my laptop ....still no good.
I have been paying for this service now for 6 weeks with no use possible.
To add insult to injury they have now cut off my antime access because I am paying for broadband instead.
So now I have to use a pay as you go service as well!!!!!
Watch out if you have this problem it will not be solved easily.
Any other sugestions out there to solve this major nightmare.
THANKS

All USB ports provide a very low voltage to the devices connected to them. This voltage can sometimes be so low as to make the device not work properly. The normal advice is that you should plug your modem direct into a USB port on the PC and not into any connected hub. If that doesn't give you enough then you may need to get a powered USB hub but that shouldn't be neccessary.
