      #6206 - Mon Aug 18 2003 08:48 PM

i currently use gio internet for my dial-up connection isp. I use the 7.99 a month service anytime package. My first question is is 31.2kbps a good line speed and secondly could anyone recommend another isp for around the same price with a reliable connection

Hi

No 31.2 is not particularly good for a dial up connection. The best would be around 46 to 50. However it is highly unlikely that changing your ISP will result in a better speed. The major factor that determines your connection is the quality of the telephone line and the distance of your house from the telephone exchange. If you have a BT line I would suggest that you ask them to check the line noise and if possible, turn up the gain. You might also want to consider removing any other phones that are connected to that line whilst you are surfing. Finally you might want to consider upgrading your modem or it's drivers.

My dial-up Internet connection runs at 50.6 KBPs but it costs about double the cost of yours. I don't know if that is a factor in your case but its also worth checking.

I have used Gio for nearly two years. Connection is 41.2Kbps (perhaps on the slower side of perfect!!). My line had a "DACS" on it (something BT use to save putting more lines in. Ring BT (150) and ask for it to be removed , you will have to keep on to them as they will refuse at first.

DACS is a pain. What it means is you are sharing the line with a neighbour, in my youth these were called party lines. The DACS is used in a vicinity where there is a shortage of lines and if you are unfortunate enough to be using Dial-up on such a line it will seriously affect performance. Indeed you cannot have Broadband on a DACS line.
Now! The legal position is this. BT have a obligation to supply you with a line. They do not however have to give you a 'full' line. As long as you can make calls then they are within their rights. The fact that you don't get a reasonable internet connection doesn't interest them.
BT are generally most reluctant to help in this matter. You can however make a nuisance of yourself and constantly chase them and if you are lucky they just might do something. Alternatives are get Broadband, they have to un-DACS you for that. or get Cable if it is your area.
