In May I will be away from home for a month. I believe the hotel has Modem points.
What is the best (ie cheapest) way to connect to the Internet while I am there? I assume all calls made will be charged at exorbitant Hotel phone rates...?

I used to need access to the net whilst in a hotel and as you say, hotel rates are a rip-off. Despite the slow connection and the cost per call I used to use my mobile phone. If you only want your emails then a mobile is probably good enough. You will need a data cable for your phone and you may need to talk to your service supplier to set up data access on your phone.

I agree with Greysts, although you won't need a data cable if both your phone and PDA/computer are equipped with infra-red or Bluetooth.
If you don't use GRPS, you'll probably find that the time you're connected comes out of your inclusive minutes.
Another option is to visit an Internet Cafe.

If you are only accessing for emails take Rob's advice, go to an internet cafe.

Won't he need a web-based email client to use an Internet cafe? I assume they won't let you set up a POP3 client on their PC's.

One could always setup a temporary Hotmail/Yahoo!/etc., account and forward to it from your regular email server, if all you were to have is access to a browser and not OE, etc.
TFC Nothing is a problem for me...

Most ISPs allow their customers webmail access through their websites (PlusNet does, anyway).
If not, then use Mail2Web.
