I've noticed when my pc is going through the start up procedure, the icons in the system tray, which represent a program loading, are being place in there positions. My question asks, are they being put there in the start up order as each program is loaded up? The reason I ask is that my broadband connection is showing as being loaded before Zone Alarm! Does this mean I'm open to attack from hackers....albeit very momenterily?

Yes, that does show the order they are being started up. I don't know how broadband works (can't get it yet), but if you can turn it off at start up do so, then place a shortcut icon in the taskbar to start ZoneAlarm.
You should then be able to use ZA to get the connection to start - ZA has a bug which I don't think they ever fixed which when you started it, always wanted to connect to the net. With dialup this always called up the connection dialog, so i expect something similar to happen for you.
That said, don't worry too much if you can't do this. For the brief time your firewall is down, as long as your anti virus and anti scripts are running and updated, you are reasonably safe. Your computer should have its ports closed anyway unless you have a modem problem.
