Windows Update
      #51999 - Sat Mar 20 2004 07:24 PM

I have a Pentium III processor with Windows 98SE and I.E.6. installed.

Whenever I get to the "Windows Update" page all I get is a blank white screen and the task bar shows "Done" What can I do to use this facility?

This is an old problem I think Bricat if I remember correctly. I suggested it was something to do with firewall because I was having a similar problem. I think I told him to access windows update through msn explorer that's how I worked around it.
Edit I'm glad he only had 22 posts to look through. What have you been doing for updates all this time or have you been on a cruise ?

Thank you for the suggestion but all I got when clicking on your "here"was the following page

Hi, I had exactly the same problem ages ago and discovered that it was because my anti-spy program was blocking a site called 'a248.e.akamai.net'. Perhaps, if you have something like "Spysites" and it is blocking this particular site, that may be the reason that you cannot access Microsoft Update. Even the Microsoft troubleshooting site did not mention this.

Your first reply was from Bricat. When I clicked on his link, I got a white blank screen, and " done ". This was because I had scripting blocked ( security overkill ). Windows-update pages require scripting enabled, so you could check that.
Chris's reference to Akamai is also useful. Akamai was previously regarded as a dodgy site, so when official updates started to come from there, maybe some progs were blocking it.

My security settings show "active scripting enabled". I went to the Akamai web site but could not find anything to deal with the problem so I am still looking for help.

See if these windows update sites are any good.............http...........https.

If not, how about this.....

To view and download updates for your computer, Windows Update should be listed as a Trusted Site in Internet Explorer.

To add Windows Update to the trusted sites zone:

On the Tools menu in Internet Explorer, click Internet Options.
Click the Security tab.
Click the Trusted Sites icon, and then click Sites...
Uncheck the "require server verification" checkbox.
Make sure the following URLs are listed in the Web Sites list box:

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
https://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

Then you can try the two sites again. ( There are many causes of update problems ).

Besides Jack Flash's advice you might want to try these.

In IE6, Tools, Internet Options, Advanced put a tick against 'Disable Script Debugging' and remove the tick from 'Display a notification about every script error'.

Because the script you pasted mentions Java and AxtiveX it might help if you download Java from here and the latest ActiveX from Microsoft.

Thanks for your two suggestions. The first produced the up date page but although it said wait whilst scanning nothing further happened. I clicked on the welcome title and got the following result
var L_SourceWUV3_Text = "Web site"; var L_SourceAU_Text = "Automatic update"; var L_SourceOther_Text = "Other"; var L_ProductUpdatesAlt_Text = "Pick from a list of updates for |PRODUCT|."; var L_CancelInstall2_Text = "Moving away from this page will cancel the install process. Some items will not get installed."; var L_PersonalizationSaveSettingsPrompt_Text = "You have made changes to your settings.\nTo save your settings now, click OK. To continue without saving, click Cancel."; var L_CanceledEULAText_Text = "You did not accept the license agreement for this item. If you do not wish to install this item, you can remove it."; var L_SplashPickUpdatesCriticalText4_Text = "An error occurred while scanning for driver updates. We are not able to display any updated drivers for your system."; var L_ErrorSupport_Text = "You can also get online support if you are having problems with Windows Update.";

The second suggestion was better and produced the up date page and my computer was scanned and it said there were no critical up dates[ needed but I could select from a list of titles that might be of interest. However this list did not appear.

Many thanks for the suggestion so that I can at least get to an update of any critical patches.

When you get as far as " no critical updates at this time ", click on " Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition [xx] " , over on the left. This should bring up the list of titles you mention.

Is it me or does everybody get a whole pile of script garbage with Toseland's postings. For instance on this one it starts off like this:-

var L_SourceWUV3_Text = "Web site"; var L_SourceAU_Text = "Automatic update"; var L_SourceOther_Text = "Other"; var L_ProductUpdatesAlt_Text = "Pick from a list of updates for |PRODUCT|."; var L_CancelInstall2_Text = "Moving away from

What's going on?

I see the same garbage as you, Spence.
I gather that Toseland's setup is incompatible with some sites, but the secure site seems best. Hopefully, a complete solution is near.
