Log-In Trouble
      #4947 - Wed Aug 06 2003 10:15 AM

I have just registered with a secure Internet Site. The registration process went through OK and I received my confirmation e-mail instructing me to log-in and complete the process.

The problem is it will not let me log-in even though I have entered the correct details. I disabled my Firewall and Pop-up Stopper in case they were the problem. I have communicated with them by e-mail and they say it is most probable because I do not have the required 128 bit encryption. I am running Internet Explorer version 6 which I understand includes this package.

Any ideas anyone?

Go to Help | About Internet Explorer
Check the cipher strength there
If it is 128 bit, try deleting your cookies and checking your time

Thanks Iain,

Checked those items and they are all OK except the clock which I have reset. I cleared out all the cookies but still no joy. Weird

Any other ideas?

Have you got Spybot, Joe? (Memory's going and I can't remember!

No Iain,

I do not have Spybot but I do have Spyblaster. I have un-ticked all the protection items in settings and tried that, cannot find any way to switch the thing off. Still no admission though.

Joe

How about putting the url in the Trusted Sites under Tools/Internet Options/Security. As it's a secure site it should have an HTTPS address.

I've tried that Iain, yes it does have a HTTPS address but still no joy. It must be something at the other end, I've asked them to cancel the registration and I'll start again. They have referred the matter up-wards.

I have now made other arrangements so there is no great urgency, so unless you can think of anything else we'll leave it until I hear from them. I'm sure you must be fast out of ideas by now so in the meantime thanks for all your efforts.

My humble apologies Greysts it was you, I really must pay more attention. Something to do with senile dementia I think.

Anyway I'm grateful to you both for your gallant efforts on my behalf. I'm pleased to say the problem is now resolved, seemingly the initial registration process, for some undisclosed reason, did not complete properly despite their e-mail confirming it had. I have now registered again using a different e-mail address and password and all appears to be OK. If only there was something to indicate there was a problem and what it was. Sorry to you both for the hassle but at least its good to know that security in relation to financial matters is treated seriously.

Thanks again.

Joe.

As it was you, I'll let you off just this once but don't let it happen again. If you're not careful people will think that they simply have to ask a question on this forum and you'll come up with the answer. I don't know how anybody could get that idea.

That's the trouble with Puta. Just because he knows it all, he thinks he knows it all, and then he denies it. "Where will it all end?", I ask myself. Nobody answers. Can't even have an intelligent conversation with myself nowadays.

I had a similar trouble with my amazon account. Every time I tried to log in it just returned me to the login page. Everything was set up correctly and so it frustrated the hell out of me for days. I eventually traced it to my time settings. Although my clock showed the correct time, it wasn't set to GMT. As soon as I set that up properly everything worked fine. I contacted amazon and they confirmed that this has happened lots of times.

Just something to bear in mind if this sort of thing ever happens and everything seems to be correct.
