Homepage Hijack!
      #49074 - Wed Mar 10 2004 06:02 PM

Help! I’ve been infected through the Internet and my Homepage is defaulting to something pretty nasty. I’ve tried absolutely everything to get rid of it, even re-installing Windows (98), though as it’s an upgrade I can’t even do that. So I’ve been exploring the Registry and I think I’ve found the problem.

If I follow path: Local Machine > Software > Microsoft > Internet Explorer > Main, I can see that my default, local and homepage entries have been re-set to C:\WINDOWS etc…. (the url of the offending website). But if I change them to the page of choice they just re-set themselves straight away. Please, please someone tell me what to do in the Registry to put things right! As I say, I don’t seem to be able to re-install Windows, and I’ve tried every Registry-fixing programme under the sun, so I’m sure the Registry is the place if only I knew what to do! Many thanks.

Follow the instructions at the top of the browsers forum (one post up).

...nothing's foolproof to a talented fool.

Thanks for that, but I've already tried both Spybot and Adaware many times to no avail. I'll try the others though. Cheers.

Go to this page and download 'Hijack This!'.

Unzip it, launch Hijack This, then press Scan, and press Save Log

This will generate a text file that will list all running processes, all applications that are loaded automatically when you start Windows, and more.

open that file
Go to Edit | Select all
Now click Edit | copy to copy it

Do not change anything just yet
Come back to the forum, Right Click and paste its contents here

Thanks for your help folks, but now I can't even get past 'safe-mode' or log on - though why it's in safe-mode's anyone's guess! (It's not this computer, but another one obviously) I'll kick it and see what happens tomorrow. Cheers

Can you run your anti virus in safe mode?
Please post your query to the boards as many hands make light work, and I'm not talking electricians! If your problem is solved, let us know so that others can learn.
